Removing the axles is easier than unbolting and separating the trans from the engine while they are still in the engine bay.
If you are really uncomfortable with rolling the car a few feet without axles, then pick up these for $65 at Harbor Freight

The original question was "Has anyone here actually done it, and is it outlined anywhere?" and I think it has been answered. For sure it is not outlined anywhere. And if anyone has actually done it then they aren't speaking up to recommend it.
