Cam position sensor?
A year or so ago, my 850R suddenly wouldn't start. I've by now forgotten the exact symptoms, but I figured out by symptoms that it probably wasn't the battery, starter, or coil. I searched in a couple forums (MVS included), and it seemed the cam position sensor was a safe bet as the culprit. I went to a junkyard (didn't want to spend bucks for a new one and have it turn out to not be the culprit) and found one, put it on my car (very easy switch!), and that fixed the problem. Still using the junkyard part a year later, too!
850R suddenly will not turn over at all.

A starter is an electrical motor not a generator (alternator), it will not put any voltage out! It sounds you tested your alternator and its good. Have you tested your starter?R converter wrote:I meant the starter is putting out 14.7 volts
Here is how to do it:
Even with a bad CPS, the engine would turn over but not run.chbon wrote:Cam position sensor?

I had the battery tested today, and it is fine. I replaced the ignition switch yesterday, and still did not solve anything.
I called a shop that specializes in European cars, and they said that the P N P switch may be the culprit.
I did not mention that since this problem has occured, I have to over ride the shifter.
So I know the starter, battery, ignition switch, and ground wires are all good. The coil and alternator would not cause the symptoms I am having.
Again the car was running perfect before all of this. Once I shut the motor off, the car died unexpectedly, and with no explanation so far.
From what I was told, if the PNP is bad, the car will "think" it is in a gear, and immobilize its self.
Is there a way to temporarily bypass the PNP, so I can pick up the part needed ?

It won't start in neutral? If the PNP is slightly out of alignment or acting up, the car will usually start in neutral.
If it WAS the PNP, however, you wouldn't be getting a 'click' from the starter. Absolutely nothing would happen.
As I said before, try jumping the terminals on the starter. Try it this way to bypass the PNP and see if the starter will fire.

I had a starter in a Honda that would spin on the bench, but couldn't turn the engine over anymore.

Yeah, seems to be. My starter died as well (it would run on the bench but draw too much amperage, causing it to melt the red cable). Before towing to the shop, it would only do a faint click click when I try to start.FCPGroton wrote:This seems to be the issue of the month. Will it start if you jump from another car?
Even if the starter will run, the solenoid might not be working fine to put it in gear with the flywheel.
Try to see if it start in neutral to make sure it's not the PNP. If not, check the starter and if you can, bring it to a specialized shop to get it rebuilt.

Ok, so the car does not start in neutral. I was turning the key hard, and that was the clicking, my bad there.
I am headed out to dive into that PNP, and will get back with results.

I brought the Volvo to a repair shop, and they fixed a wiring problem, but have no record of what was done.
I was coming back from Concord NH yesterday, and stopped in Amherst for a quick lunch. I came back out , and the car started doing the same thing it did last July. I turn the key, the car will not turn over. I changed the PNP switch last Summer. I also tried another ECU last Summer, with no luck.
Since last July, I have replaced the starter. I have replaced the engine with a low mileage B5234 T5 motor. I changed motors in January, and messed with alot of wires, with no problems.
It seems to go through this problem when the motor is fully warmed up. I had the car trucked to Townsend MA, and when we took the car off the ramp, it started perfectly, as if nothing ever happened (except getting dinged $100 for a tow).
I took the car back to the shop that worked on it last July, and they can't find anything wrong with it.
Occasionally the motor will "kick" when I am trying to start it. This occurs about once a week.
The only thing that I can think would cause this problem would be something in the wiring harness, or something to do with the engine immoblizer.
I am seriously considering on getting rid of the car at this point, and getting something else.
And ideas would be appreciated.

do this also voltage drop on pos cable and test grounds after cleaning them this way: measure batt voltage under load. then attach jumper cable from motor to neg batt post. if voltage change by 0.2V or more under load, ground cables are bad.

I recently had the same exact problem. Turns out it was the battery. My battery was only running off of 8volts. I replaced the battery and it cranked right up.

Thank you for your replies.
It turned out to be the starter, even though the starter was new last year.
I have also developed other problems with the car, and am not going to fix it.
I am in the process of selling the car, and buying something else.
