Re: S80 Heater core replacement

Post by boosted5cyl »

My heater core exploded too. Big time. Had to shut the thing down with glowing red turbos :(.
Getting the old one out took about 30mins. About to put new one in today which i figure will take longer as I need to be more careful of course.

Any hints/tips on how I can get coolant out of the carpet as well as the ducting?
I took some pics of the procedure. Will post later.

I have successfully gotten the new heater core in place but now am unable to get the clips back that connect the pipes to the core. Any ideas? This was an awful repair and just want it finished. Thanks!

Are the pipes sitting in all the way? If not the clips will either stop, or go underneath the pipes.

Well I got the lower one in place after much fighting. It would seem the new o rings don't want to compress at all and I have to push really hard. Am I doing something wrong or is there a trick to getting the pipes to sit all the way that I am missing? Thanks for the quick reply.

For better or for worse, I found it easier to get the pipe in if I seated the orings in the core, rather than putting them on the pipes. If you are already doing this all I can say is I feel your pain..

I too am having trouble getting the clips back in. The new o-rings seated in the core didn't seem to work any better. Any other tips or tricks? Really bad angle

Gentlemen, just finished replacing the Heater Core on a 2000 S80. It was a trying patient endeavor, but thanks to all of the above tips and tricks with regard to heater hose removal and those F'n clips it was worth the time spent on the project vice Dealership costs.
Thanks again for the guidance.

I had the same problem with the o-rings not compressing and had a hell of a time getting the pins over the pipes. I thought I would post my solution.

I went to home depot and purchased a an eye and eye turnbuckle.

with this i was able to adjust the length of the turnbuckle and jam it between the steering column and the heater core pipe. The additional pressure allowed me to get the top clip on. The bottom one wouldn't go in all the way. So I left the turnbuckle in place and turned the car on to warm up the pipes. The heat did the trick. The o-ring compressed and it was relatively easy to get the pin in place.
hope this helps
