Hmm... Just exactly how does a fuel injector get "cracked" anyway? It's amazing what they find when they really lookMe again wrote:Well, the car is reluctantly at the mechanics now. They've checked the cam shaft position sensor, which was fine, and have discovered a cracked injector on the #5 cylinder. I can understand it causing a problem with fuel delivery, but would this also cause the loss of spark?
I think I'm going to print out this thread and take it to him as a list of things to check out....
Appreciate all of the replys!! Keep em coming!

Did you pinpoint your problem? I seem to have the same intermittent thing going on too, but it's been 2 years. Mechanics can't figure it out.
The only consistent thing is that sometimes I can't start it in the morning...If you're lucky, press accelerator a couple of times while it's cranking, it catches but runs rough, but take the foot off the accelerator, it dies again. It seems like fuel is not getting where it should be, but then I can smell gas (indicating that I'm flooding). Replaced the ignition coil; next I'm replacing spark plugs. By the way, I just replaced the cam sensor....when the cam sensor died, I almost crashed my car. Very dangerous because you lose power steering and brakes. Not a good thing if you're traveling fast. They should have a warning light for this.

I have the exact same problem as you are experiencing. However, I have a 1993 850 GLT. In the past month, I have replaced the fuel pump relay, ignition coil, spark plugs and wires, had a major tune up and have cleaned my Mass Air Flow Sensor, but after $950.00 CDN in repairs, still no success. The car is currently with my mechanic and they are waiting for the car to stop turning over! The frustrating thing is this whole intermittent problem of not starting! Two different mechanics have looked at it so far, and have confirmed that the fuel pump is working and that perhaps it may be the cam shaft sensor or the ignition modulator (relay?). Once they figure out what's wrong with it, I'll be sure to let you know!

Bill Volvo 850
My 1994 Volvo 850 wouldn't start in cold weather. Even if I turned the car off for 10 minutes on a cold day, it wouldn't start unless I jiggled the automatic gear shifter. To fix this I dissassembled the gear position sensor. To do this, remove the battery. The gear position sensor is on top of the transmission. Take it off and remove the screws holding it together. Open it up and wipe out all the crud and grease. Then put it all back together. This has proven to fix it for the past 14 months! Now the car has started stalling when I'm in stop and go traffic, but I just slide it in neutral and after 20 seconds it starts right back up. Loosing power steering is always a pain. Not sure how I'm going to try to fix this one.
