She was rear ended by a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I think the damage was amplified due to the difference in height of the bumpers. Had he hit the bumper instead of the trunk, it might have been different. She was stopped and the Jeep was traveling at an estimated 50 mph. In a 35 mph zone. She was thrown forward about 40 ft into oncoming traffic, but was able to pull over because the engine and front wheel drive was still functioning.
Those pictures of the Nissan might have me rethinking the Infiniti purchase. The thing that swayed me on the Infiniti was the reliability, and the lack of suitable S70's in the local area.
I have another daughter who just got her license. Since I have a few months before the next purchase, I will probably reconsider going back into a S70. My oldest daughter had a 960 with over 300K miles on it. The problems with both were really minor irratating issues with high repair cost associated with them. The A/C especially. It seemed like just getting a service appointment took forever.
Had it not been for this site, I probably would not have gotten the S70. Using this site as a base, I got the S70 for a great price because it needed new front struts, a/c repair and a new timing belt. All items were outlined in a manner which were clear enough for me to undertake. Doing the work myself probably saved an estimated $2k over what the dealership was quoting.
What really turned me away was the local Volvo dealership. They were pretty unhelpful regarding maintenance on the S70. It seemed they were reluctant to answer any question at all. We also looked at getting a new XC90 to replace my wife's Yukon Denali and were pretty much given a take it or leave it for ones in stock. After two months of trying to find the right one, we gave up and started looking at BMW, Mercedes, Land Rover, Lexus and Infiniti. We ended up with an Infiniti FX35. Hence, the Infiniti I30.
Had the local Volvo dealer been a little less arrogant and more service oriented, we would have Volvos in the drive instead of Infinitis. Within the immeadiate family we have switched from four Volvos to three Infinitis and a Jaguar. It is one of those cases where we were pretty much sold on Volvo's and would have continued, but the dealer support was just not there.
All in all, the Volvo's have been great cars. I am most impressed with the safety. With four teenage drivers, safety is a big concern. On the other hand, keeping them running was becoming a full time job.

I need new tan leather seats for my 97 850 T5. If they are the same color, will fit, and are for sale, send me an email. Glad to hear your daughter was allright. When my Saab got too old last spring, I thought about the Japanese alternatives, but safety was my #1 concern. The 222hp turbo didn't hurt either!!
The car was signed over to the insurance company. I'm not sure what happens to it once it goes to the holding yard. I assume they sell it off as salvage. The only things I got to keep were things like the owners manual, remotes, spare, and some tools.

Darn! I wish we could get some stuff off of it. We're just here in Augusta (saw the SC plates). Our S70 has a million little things wrong with it. Runs great but we look like the Clampett's bought a volvo. Can't get in one side, can't get out the other! ETC, ETC, ETC!!!!!
Sir, I realize i have never spoken to you before but i'm really happy your daughter was able to get out of that traffic and didnt get killed while the back end of the car was being destroyed good thing volvos are tough as nails i could really use a passenger side headlight glass. just the glass. people are trying to rip me off by selling me the whole headlamp left and right side. keep me posted if i can get the passenger side glass to cover my headlight and highbeam.

Hi,
Took a look at your white S70 Pictures - Glad everyone is safe and that the Volvo absorbed the energy as engineered. I notice the front OK, though.
Would you consider a bulk sale of all Emissions components in the engine bay ? If so, what components, and how much ? Please let me know, Thanks, Mickey ( also where are you located ? )

My righthand rear door has a long scratch on it when I accidentally ramed into a van with a steel bar bumper. The paint was exposed but the piece of metal was only minorly caved in, as opposed to looking like a crushed Coke can. Every now and then I get into my Volvo and "knock" on the door panels to compare the sound of Volvo "solidness" with the Japanese "hollowness" -- on my parents' previous Lexus RX 300.matthew1 wrote:Every now and then I get in my 850 and notice the thickness of the doors. "Solid" they say, to me.
And look at the pics I posted above... the back door's window isn't even broken, and the back seat passenger area is hardly disturbed. All that force was consumed by the trunk crumple zone. Fantastic engineering.
PS. White cars look nice!

I bought a replacement lens for one of my headlights from IPD for just over $100 CDN. I was very concerned by the fact that my dealer wanted more than $500 CDN to replace the entire unit as they told me that was the only way to fix a broken lens. Well, 1/2 hour after receiving the replacement lens my S70's glasses were back to normal!
