I would'nt want to deal with the PNP switch right now anyway as all gears and reverse lights are working fine. So is there a physical actuator in the shifter that is released by a servo electronically?

There is. That works when you depress the brake pedal - in that case you don't need to use the override if it's working properly. It releases when you push the button on the shift knob to move it back into gear.

I just checked; you don't need to be pressing on the brake to move it into Reverse USING the override button to the side of the shifter.

Yup - That'd be solenoid 8/36.
They didn't assign a number to the microswitch in the diagrams or the
component location page, but it's the item with green leads going in and out.
It looks like this:

Ok, "properly" is what I am after. I will look at the microswitch and the brake switch for irregularities. I never hear the click of a solenoid in the shfter that people speak of, so I imagine it should be one of the switches. I'll play with it tomorrow.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

I have to turn the key back very slightly in order to shift out of park. Try this, when you start the car turn the key back slowly until the lights come on, (the ones next to the mirror are always visible). I think the return spring is bad on the ignition switch but as long as this works I wont mess with it.
Give it a shot, what have you got to lose?

I finally ran through my OBD-I codes, and while running the ABS A-3 socket, I did come up with a faulty brake pedal switch, open or short. I've read in some other thread that a solder joint can be fixed. I imagine this switch is located behind the brake lever at the steering column bottom area. Hopefully this will fix my ABS light as well as the shift lock issue.

That's the one I figured it was. Thanks again for posting the PDF.
I'll be puting in my lower right motor mount tomorrow so I can check the right front ABS sensor that was also throwing a code, and continue onto the brake switch. Fun.
