Well, you can always clean the surface and reapply the gasket. :P But I will still try the thread sealer or the Permatex, however I use thread sealer for bolts like that, since the Permatex is really a gasket maker, so I don't know which would be better.

I'm going to try JD's suggestion on the thread sealer for the bolt and see what happens.

I have the exact same problem. Just replaced the head about 2 months ago. I believe mine is coming out from under the spark plug cover. I'll look closer tomorrow. Toxic oil smoke is killing me!

Let me know what you find. I just tightened the screw this afternoon - it was pretty loose. I got on the gas hard coming up a hill to test it out on my way back tonight, and didn't smell anything terrible - that seems to be when it leaks the most. If it continues to leak, I'm going to remove the screw and put the sealant stuff on it. If it still leaks after that, then...well...I just don't care.

I am almost 100% sure mine is coming from under the spark plug cover. There is oil in there too. I have also confirmed that the oil filler cap gasket is not leaking and we have only filled it once since the rebuild so I know I did not spill oil in there. Last time I opened the spark plug cover I noticed a 1/2 inch round opening that goes into the valve cover. Is this normal fro this to be open? Seems to me it would defeat the purpose of having the crankcase ventilation tube connected. My guess is the oil is spilling out from there and drippipping down the side of the engine onto the manifold or turbo. Could this opening be specific to a particular year. Since I got a rebuilt head I am wondering if it came from a different model year possibly a V70. I have a 96 850 T Wagon. Does anyone have a photo of their 96 head under the spark plug cover? Any opening?

Does your dipstick smoke after the engine is warmed up? That and oil under the spark plug cover are telltale symptoms of a clogged PCV system.

No. I also did the ballon trick to see how much pressure there is at the dipstick and it did not inflate the balloon. I also rebuilt the PCV system about 6 months ago. May have been URO brand though since I bought it from FCP. Need to verify since I heard these do not hold up. Here is a picture of the opening on top of the valve cover under the spark plug cover where the oil is coming from. It looks like something bolts on since there are two holes next to it. Any ideas?

There was another topic that mentioned this. I guess it is not supposed to be open. Are you sure it is a hole going through the valve cover? Maybe clean it up really well and fill it with some high temp silicone? I have no idea.

Yes it goes through the valve cover. I cleaned the oil out and there is a passage. Here is the photo. So what bolts on here? Am I missing a part? Wish I had the old head to see what was on it or if it even had this passage? Would a bad PCV system cause pressure to push oil up through this hole?

Epicsurf: From what I have been reading, I think that hole is normal. Other will weigh in on that. My idea for you oil problem could be bad PCV and or not a good sealing oil cap. Lot of dried oil around the cap area. It can leak and then run down to the bottom and fill up the hole you are talking about. Check hoses on top for hose clamps that are to tight and cut the line. (Don't ask me how I know that).

Jason,(Justin) Did your problem get fixed? :D
