Failed Parts Poll for P2 Volvos
21 on my one V70 T5 with 196k but that's since new using P/O records. My transmission vote isn't fair since it was a software reflash in 2005.carboncow wrote:I got 22 of them (OK on two cars) but I still want to know what I win?

i saw no option for angle gear failure on the AWD models.
I thought I would update my count to 32 items now between two cars. This is only a year later after the original post. I would have to say I w/o Vida Dice in my life I would not even remotely still own these cars!carboncow wrote:I got 22 of them (OK on two cars) but I still want to know what I win?

Here's my contribution, I summarised the info from the poll of failure issues, and came up with this - forgive parochial stuff that pertains to spelling etc, I am from the UK:
V70 MkII TOP 5 FAILURES
In order:
1 UPPER ENGINE MOUNT - 42 votes, 5%
2 CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS - 39 votes, 5%
3 FRONT STRUT MOUNTS - 33 votes, 4%
4 SWAY BAR LINKS - 29 votes, 4%
5 TIE RODS - 27 votes, 3%
5a PREMATURE LIGHT BULB - 27 votes, 3%
6 ALARM SYSTEM - 25 votes, 3%
- also SIREN CONTROL MODULE fault gets 17 votes and 2%, likely related, the module fault under right front wheel arch causes this.
7 FRONT STRUTS - 24 votes, 3%.
8 ETM (ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE) - 21 votes, 3%
9 TRANSMISSION MOUNT - 20 votes, 2%
9a TRANSMISSION INCLUDING SOFT UPGRADES - 20 votes, 2%
9b IGNITION COILS (on petrol cars only) - 20 votes, 2%
10 AXLE SHAFTS (not drive shafts/CV joints?) - 19 votes, 2%
10a EXHAUST PIPE HANGER BROKEN/RUSTED - 19 votes, 2%
(NB this may be more likely on petrol models due to internal issues?)
NB A common fault after a few years is the AirCon needs re-charging, this is so common it must be in the top 10, but is not mentioned specifically in the list.
So, if you wanted to know where to start, this list would be it. VALID AS OF 29th APRIL 2013.
Best to all.

My major repairs so far on an '01 V70T5a
113k (New to me) - Oil pump and all related seals replaced. Troubleshoot SRS error to no avail.
130k - Replace front suspension components, struts, spring seats, top strut bearings
145k - Replaced front brake pads and rotors.
147k - Almost failed smog, will probably need to replace O2 sensors and catalytic converter before next smog check.
I know that the top engine mount is going bad, as well as the forward engine torque mount. Front subframe mounts could use replacement. Rear wiper arm is broken. Sunroof works only as a vent, will not roll back without grinding on something.
"Oil pump" should probably be added to the poll...

I don,t see flexible brake lines at the front wheels. Mine were both cracked and needed replacement.
