Re: Timing belt alignment woes
They definitely look OK to me. There's no other bolt on these engines that look like those. They're supposed to fall around 1/8th inch shy of the timing belt. You can measure the distance to the timing belt by poking in some wire, then make sure the length of the bolts is just shy of that length.

OK, good. I thought they had to be the ones but it seemed odd they would extend so close to the belt.

They're meant to be the last hope of defense in case of a failed tensioner. The idea behind them is they will stop the belt skipping a tooth by stopping the belt from raising off the crank pulley.
To date I don't think they've worked, though when I forgot to place this shield on my 960 and my accessory tensioner failed the two belts did a wonderful mind meld.

When we did Carlene's TB, the valves were really clacky because of a lack of oil from the car sitting so long. Driving it around got oil to the hydraulic lifters. Probably what happened to yours?

I'm having a similar problem with engine valve tap on my 850 after a timing belt change (also used a Hepu water pump). I thought at first I messed up the timing but I checked the timing marks several times before that initial startup and everything was lined up. When I started the car for the first time I heard a rather loud sound coming from the engine which sounds like the valves are tapping. The car had been sitting for about three weeks before I started it after the timing belt change. Now I'm a bit concerned that I may have damaged the valves so I'm going to check the timing again. One other thing that might be a factor is the owner of the car drove it to my house with anti-freeze leaking from a bad radiator. When I went to remove the radiator and drain the cooling system there was very little anti-freeze in the system. Before doing any work on the vehicle I had to move the car about twenty feet in my driveway. Before turning it off and I checked the temperature gauge which appeared to be fine. I just don't remember hearing such a loud tap of the valves when it was running.

I usually do a oil prime on any car i have taken apart or parked for to long.
on the volvo when i rebuilt it , I took the coil fuse out and disconnected injectors then cranked it for 10 seconds with a few minutes between. This gets the oil to the top end even if it still clanks when you start itll at least have some oil up there.
