A non-turbo engine will throw the rods out the block if you put a turbo on it. We've seen it happen here from people that thought they knew better. The LPT turbos still run a good 7-8 psi, and the lower ends of the turbo engines are strengthened accordingly.
Yes, you can use a VIN 58. That's the high-pressure turbo 2.3, but it'll work in place of the 2.4T just fine. Keep your small 13G turbo; the 99 computers are not easily re-programmed for the T5 turbo. Initial throttle response will be a bit less snappy, but you can adjust for that in other ways.
That engine MUST be from a 1999+ car. 1998-earlier will not work.
One small difference between the AWD engines and FWD engines is the oil pan. Steal the one from your blown XC engine and fit it to the new one to make room for the bevel gear housing at the bottom.
