I know this a long-ago post to which I am replying...But it may help someone else who just acquired a 2001 volvo xc v70. :D

I downloaded the PDF owner's manual https://www.volvocars.com/us/own/owner- ... rs-manuals for the car and it explained the headlight functions as follows:

Headlights, parking lights

O All lights off

Models with daytime running lights: Low beam headlights will automatically come on if the ignition key is in position II. Front and rear parking lights and license plate lights will also be on.

Volvo recommends the use of daytime running lights. If, however, you would prefer to have these lights turned off (USA only), please consult your Volvo retailer. Please note that the use of daytime running lights is mandatory in Canada.

Parking lights on

Headlights, parking lights, license plate lights and instrument panel illumination are on if the ignition key is in position II. If the headlight switch is in position all lights will go out when the ignition is switched off.

The headlight switch must be in this position before the high beams will function.

Switch from high to low beams and vice versa by pulling the turn signal switch lever on the left side of steering column toward you.

Good info. I think I've also heard that if the daytime running lights are switched off by the main dealer, there is no warning sound if the car is left parked with the headlights on.

The nice thing about the drl setting, apart from being much safer for you, is that it's impossible to park with the headlights on. Whenever I get into a car with manual headlights that have to be turned off when parking I scratch my head and wonder who actually wants it that way..

I do. My dealer refused to turn them off way back when. Next week my car goes in for new headlights and I plan on insisting for them to be off. Running all the time burned out the reflectors years ago and now both allow water to pour into the lights due to warping from heat. Now it is costing me $1,500.00 US dollars to replace something that would be fine had my dealership respected my wishes and shut them off.

So beyond being aggravating, the lights being on at all times ruins the housings. June

The DRL disable procedure was spelled out in the owner's manual in my '01.

Though the headlights are expensive (I think I paid $280 for one last year) $1500 to replace them is ridiculous.

Mostly I was commenting on the fact that some cars require you to manually turn the lights off when you park instead of just figuring out for itself that headlights on a parked car does no good.

Personally none of my 200k miles plus cars have had worn headlights. But as always it's possible.

And there is quite a significant road safety benefit to cars always being lit up. On newer cars with LED DRLs it doesn't really matter as much for component wear either.

I don't think LEDs generate the heat halogen lights do so warping or burning of the reflectors likely won't be a problem.

For me initially I wanted the ability to turn the light off manually with the switch for idling in parking spaces. For the last couple of years I wait in the car on nearly every day. It is ungodly hot here in Florida so I turn the car on for ac. This turns the lights on indicating to others the car is on so obviously I am leaving the parking space, when actually I am waiting for someone. People get crazy on occasion thinking I am a idiot taking my time because they are waiting and get really upset. A few times now i have had some crazy guy beating on my window screaming obscenities at me. All because i cannot turn the lights off and run the engine. That's my main reason for wanting manual lights. The destruction of the housings is secondary as Volvo is able to replace them still at a price. June

New headlights and turn signals installed today and Daytime Running lights are disabled. I wasn't taking no for a answer on the DRL and low and behold my mechanic found the menu to disable them and allow the light switch to actually work. I am really happy! Look at the sparkling difference between the burned up housings and the brand new Genuine Volvo replacements. June

Now that my day time running lights are disabled I can tell you positively when the key is turned off and the headlights are on the on position the headlights shut off immediately. You cannot accidentally leave the headlights on once the engine is shut down. The park lights can be left on with engine off as it was Before. The only difference is the 0 position is now all lights off Instead of headlights still on. So I can leave the headlight switch in the on position and run the car like it still has day time running Lights when I want them. June
