Re: Door lock problems

Post by phidoe2000 »

Looking at the assembly, the spring is compressed when the door is in the un-lock position, so I'm thinking that for the motor to unlock the door, it has to push against the spring, effectively loading the spring. It appears that the spring assists the motor in fully engaging the lock when it's in lock mode. Is it possible that with age the motor simply doesn't produce enough torque to work against the spring regardless of replacing the resistor? Time will tell if there are any issues with the spring being removed. Ken

@ Jimmy: You da man Dog!!! I had taken one of those motors apart a little over a year ago and knew that the motor was weak but didn't understand why. I even took the thing around town asking people at plasces like model train stores but they never mentioned anything about a PTC.

I picked up another spare latch today. I'm about to tear it apart and see what I can do. I also got a piece of coper wire from a building site. It's about 6" long, I figured I could fix a few motors with it. ;)

Here is the post I did on it last August: http://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-s70- ... post283855

@ Jimmy: How did you get the motor open? This little thing is tough (the 2 wings bent into the plastic top).

Ok, I have the motor open, when I look inside I don't know what I'm looking for. This one is all black inside.

The motor has a couple of clips that hold around the shaft. Then there is two flat sides of the motor top, the plastic part. The motor casing was secured on the round ends of the motor. Then, one of the flat sides has the clips coming from it. If you set the motor down with the motor towards you, the gear shaft away from you and the thing that holds the clips (that hold the shaft) up (the motor contact pins down), there is a flat metal piece to the right that does pull out. The piece I removed is 1/4" x 3/8", is this the part that needs to be replaced?

That is it. The square wafer is the PTC. If you use an ohm meter it likely will read 22-25 ohms. It should be 2-4 ohms.

I guess you found the right something to bend the dimples out to get the end case off.
I hammered the end of a 10 ga. single conductor wire and cut it to the right length.

Volvo and others LOVE those PTC's. The headlamp wipers that stop in random places and later on will be parked where they belong are suffering from PTC issues as they have the PTC to protect motor from ice/snow issues. I fixed wipers on my 95 960 since they are easy to get out. The ones on my 98 XC need PTC bypass surgery but the dang motors are a pain in the butt to get out.

I went by a home construction site yesterday and got a piece of the wire yesterday. I have a ohm meter but don't really understand what I'm doing when I use it. Lol. I thought more ohms was better.

I ended up grinding the dimples away with a small screw driver and scissors.

Getting the latch casing open was pretty easy by heating up the seam with a lighter. I also have one of those small lighter torches that would likely work good as well. I'm going to glue it closed with a little super glue.

Last question for me on the door latch. Are the latches swapable from front to rear? I know the rear latches have the child latch switch but other than that is it ok? I think the angle may be a little different because I had a little trouble getting the handle to stay in the latch after I installed a rear in the front. (I grinded off the child lock switch).

No to super glue. Super glue works when the surfaces meet perfectly. Use silicone since the lock case should be a weatherproof seal.
