Re: Beyond OBDII - Small, Dedicated, Onboard Computers
Did this thread just stop? Or is it more to it? Have anyone been doing anything to this?

I haven't done anything with this.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.
Also -> Amazon link. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

If anyone has ideas or suggestions for what they'd want in a small, feature limited package (and where they'd like to house it on the dash) let me know. I'm an EE by trade, and want something like this for my own volvo. Basic stuff like avg temps, trend plots etc.
Like others said you can really go wild with this, but from past experience stuff like that will never get done. Needs to have boundaries and a few key goals you want to accomplish.

Hi marshallh. Thanks for joining.
page 1 (default):
Current gear
Current RPM
Current throttle %
page 2:
Distance traveled since reset
Average mpg & speed since reset
page 3:
5 sec average/30 sec average/120 sec average of mpg & speed
I'll think of more, and how to group them. You're darn right about scope. This is so wide open it's easy to want too much.

That's a good start. The screen could either be a simple 16x4 character LCD (the P2 volvo message display is a Hitachi 16x2), it could be a monochrome LCD, a VFD, a full color touchscreen (okay thats a bit ridiculous)
On my P2 volvo the spot left of the stereo looks alright, but it would mean a small, vertical screen. Or, it could be a vent clip-on like an SAFC...

Heh good point... we should probably start with output device first, before output
I'm leaning toward something simple, non-input. We can always swap out displays later. For screen location, I think there are too many patrons (Volvo models X personal preference) to please, so addressing this is probably out of scope. We'll make it small, users will find great places and methods to attach it.
2.2" color $20 http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/301075696467?lpid=82

2x16 monochrome $20 http://chicagodist.com/products/adafrui ... MgodqEIAmw

2x16 monochrome (red) $25 http://www.adafruit.com/products/1110

I like that small 2.2" display. Would look great with slight amber text on black background.
I just got tools for developing with the Atmel XMEGA series devices so I will try playing around some when I have some time.
3 buttons on the thing ought to cover just about everything I think (Next, Change, Reset)
Also just realized there is a possibility of going wireless with the thing - put the smart bits on the ODBII connector end and use a cheaply available serial transceiver (maybe even bluetooth since I am somewhat familiar with that) to relay the stats up to the display, which could be battery powered for no wires. I'm liking this a lot more..

Just ordered a DiCE and got VIDA running.
Are there any known metrics that can be read out only with VIDA, and aren't available with ye olde ODBII logger? If so I can probably reverse the protocol to get those.
