Those "absorbers" seem to more commonly be called "valve hushers". They will break down and lose most of their ability to "hush" after several thousand miles. Must have been one of those "features" Volvo implemented to make the cars sound "quiet and dignified" as they drove off of the lot (cough cough crumby rubber accessory bushings cough).

If you are going to replace the hushers, be sure to set the valve clearance before installing them - otherwise your measurements will be off.
