1999 V70 Alternator Replacement - will one from a 1998 work?

This almost makes me want to go out and buy a crimping tool in anticipation of cable problems with our Volvos and just manufacture my own. In fact I've heard of many forum users who have done just that to save a small fortune. In fact I'll be looking online through Matthews links to Amazon as soon as I can.
