I have read that a bad coolant temp sensor will prevent starting, is it like the cam sensor in that there will be no spark or fuel if it is bad??

There will be fuel, but too much/too little of it, depending on what reading the sensor is giving the ECU.

I GOT IT RUNNING! Thanks for all the help. I think the change that finally "fixed it" was resetting the fuel trim values by disconnecting/shorting the battery. The P0505 and P0172 codes came back, but I think I will start a new post for that.
