The fella I go it from recently said he always just flushed the trans fluid by the cooler lines...He had never changed the filter. (He had it for 8 years and put 283,000 km on it...The car has a total of 450,000 km.)

Is it possible that the filter has "expired" even though the fluid appears nice and clean?!

The way I check the fluid is to use a 1/2" breaker bar. Push it in the square slot & rotate about 90 degrees then pull out, putting it back is the reverse, rotate it after it's been put in so the clip hold the stick and you can pull the breaker bar out. I think it's silly but that's how I do it and I don't hurt myself.
