I have also never heard it called an ECM.

Volvo factory tools and Volvo dealer training have called the combined fuel and ignition control unit an ECM for 20 years. ECU is used to represent electronic control unit and is used as a generic term not limited to one control module.
ECM has been the acronym used in VADIS and now VIDA.
I assumed the terminology was in wider consistent use.
As I mentioned earlier, there was a standardized terminology list established pursuant to the same regulations that gave us standardized diagnostic connectors on all cars.
Volvo used "air mass meter" for what everyone is properly calling a MAF sensor. MAF sensor is the OBD-II standard name for that part.

And no one, including Volvo techs say "air mass meter" to anyone except perhaps to themselves...right?
They say you need a MAF sensor like everyone else does.
Ergo.......I rest my case

YOU ARE FREAKING RIGHT JIM! THEY SAY MAF SENSOR and ECM. Air mass meter died with ECU. My point exactly! Thank you for realizing that technology and terminology have changed.

Go back and re-read what I typed, "used air mass meter", not USES air mass meter.

Go to your dealer techs you know and have them drag out some training manuals and look a few things up on VIDA. You will not find "ECU". You will "ECM" all over the place. ECM upgrade, ECM reload, ECM on the Network map, ECM on the DTC map, ECM in the wiring diagram books, and all diagnostic trouble codes, AKA fault codes, from the engine control module as being 'ECM xxxx or ECM Pxxxxxx depending on whether the vehicle uses Volvo proprietary codes or Global Generic Diagnostic codes respectively.

It is perfectly OK for you to use ECU if you please but it doesn't mean I'm mistaken to call the engine control module an ECM because you don't know the current standardized terminology prescribed by US regulations and used by car manufacturers pursuant to those regulations.
I will admit I could have also used "ECU" in the description because I do know people still call engine control modules that acronym.

I did not say you're mistaken, I said using that confuses people as it's a term the GENERAL PUBLIC usually does not use.
Of course VIDA printouts say that, it's written by Swedes!
They can call whatever they want to call it, it's their car, but that doesn't make it easy for the rest of the English speaking world.

Look I know a great way to solve this problem :D :

Jimmy57, I and the more knowledgeable, up-to date, informed and technically correct crew here at MVS will call it an ECM and all the others can continue to call it whatever they like :D

BTW it's not a Swedish or European standard and is not peculiar to people who DON'T speak English. It's an international standard.

Now jimmy why don't you start a new thread so you can actually sell that ECM, ECU or CPU ?
