My understanding is that there is no real improvement...it would take a ton of money to completely redesign all of the software, mountings, etc. to redesign the ETM so things are as there were before- I know that's not much to comfort you but perhaps the new ETM will last much longer than the first one- and make sure they do the newest software download for it.

Well folks I get a chance to taste my own med yesterday at the dealer after I limb my 99 V70 in because of ETS. The dealer refused to replace ETM without having to go thru so-call Volvo protocols. And these protocols are expensive and not cover under warranty as they claimed. First protocol is to clean ET and other associated parts (cost $287).

After hours of talking to Volvo customer care the dealer finally told me that they will go ahead and perform this protocol and no charge. So I agreed and left the car for them for a period of 4 hours.

As I was back home and 3 hours later they called me saying that after they removed and cleaned TB they found that air oil trap needed to be replace (cost $428 not cover under warranty).

When is this going to end? It sounds to me that they are start to disect my car and empty my pocket until they find out what it really is? Please advise. I already authorized them to replace air oil trap and they not even guaranteed that this going to fix ETS issue that I have. This is really BS with this dealer, Ray Price Volvo in East Stroudsburg, Pa, for those who wants to know.

The oil trap they speak of is probably the PCV system. Parts are $140 or so for the oil trap and related hoses but since it's under the intake manifold, if you were to do it, it's a 4-5 hour job...probably at least a 3 hour job for someone at the dealer who's experienced. Taking into consideration their hourly rates, the price is not too far off. That said, I doubt it will cure the ETM issue but at least you're getting something done that probably needs to be done (I recommend replacing the entire PCV system by 100K miles on all of our cars). Make sure and ask them about the PTC nipple that needs to be cleaned when they do the PCV job. At least this will rule out one more thing and possible your car will run better- if not then they need to honor taking care of the ETM. Good luck and let us know how things go.
