Vida does provide thermostat info under "Engine-Cooling system-Coolant pump thermostat"
The correct unit for my '02 S60 AWD (turbo) with B5244T3 is 31293700 which matches the FCP diagram.
Tasca sell these as OEM for $92.54
Mine has the extra brass pipe like the one in the FCP ad

Is the t-stat housing in the picture the same as the one in your car? Mine it's different (2003 n/a) and the t-stat as well, it doesn't have the little bar on top of the pin.

that's what mine looks like as well, without the hose because is non turbo.
I might be wrong, but I think all those are the same, with the turbo/non turbo difference.

I gave the Tasca part number/price reference because they are a dealer and their database automatically looks after obsolete part numbers when you search with their engine. http://www.tascaparts.com
2003 models with LPT turbo (non R & T5s) went back to the B5254T nomenclature with increased capacity at 2521cc. The non turbos stayed with the B5244S with 2435cc
The B5244T3 was in use in '01 & '02 however thermostat housings were changed to the new type in '02
Confusing enough?

I have a 2005 XC90 2.5T and the tstat is the whole assembly by Wahler, about $100.
In the P80 (850 and S/V70)...the thermostat is about $15, the ECT is $50 (which usually fails around 110K or so). There is no need to replace the entire housing.
Even in the XC90 assembly, the Volvo techs' trick is: do NOT remove the whole housing b/c it is a PITA job. They usually remove only the upper half (Torx bolts), then swap new parts in there: new tstat itself, new ECT, and the gasket that sits between upper and lower parts of the housing. See video sowing removal of ONLY the upper half part of the housing:
Now if someone has a spare tstat assembly from the 2.5T and disassemle it, you will see:
1. ECT can be bought separately on eeuroparts for $12 or so (Volvo PN 8653103, FAE 33250)

I have searched the web and Ebay in dept, unfortunately there seems to be no thermostat sold individually (as the one pictured), for some strange reason, because it can be replaced individually as any other thermostat. I'm afraid there is little chance for a mod that can be done to a regular thermostat to make it work in the housing, because the regular t-stats have a metal cover over the pin, while in this situation the pin is uncovered and sits against the housing. Side note, it seems Bmw also adopted a 'whole housing' concept in they cars around that era.
It is interesting to read the opening temperature in C stamped on the thermostat. It should match the one on the replacements, however I found the replacement (Beck$Arnley) to be two degrees lower than the original Volvo part.
