Its great to know about this as i too only have 1 key and i'm afraid if i lose it that i'll end up handing over hundreds to a dealer for a new key.

So i'm thinking of doing this mod but instead leaving the chip carefully attached somewhere near the steering wheel area, so i can use any cut key to start the car. Of course there is always the risk of the chip somehow getting lost but i think losing the key is more likely to happen.

Its something i'll have to think about...

I had my local key maker perform the op and place the immobilizer chip on the newer switch-blade remote I purchased from eBay. It initially didn't work. I had to change the placement of the chip to another location (similar to the original location) for it to work. I didn't think it would be that sensitive but it was. My vehicle is a '00 V70R.

I made what I thought were the same incisions- but no chip! How can you determine its exact location.

Are you paying attention to the detail? With the Made In UK logo facing up and the blade pointing South the chip should be on the right.

This may seem like a silly question, but have you ever tried just putting it in some other type of holder and then just attaching it to the steering column? Or, as an alternative, have in in something and keep it in the car and then just moving it next to the other key when starting the car?

So I have a 04 c70
Got key from ebay, oem volvo, did not realize I bought red dot key, cars key was blue?
Some docs say red is correct some say blue is.
Dealer cut key for me cheaper than autoparts store or locksmith, thought after seeing dot problem, thought I would only use key for doors, or mount chip in car and then use chipless keys.
Today I just tried and car started with unprogrammed red dot key.
Will it only start a few times? Should I not take a chance?

got an 04 s60 also and agree with all that was said about dealer being crazy priced

If it starts and continues to start,
it's probably already been bypassed
in some way. Rejoice and Rock On! ;)

Did same chip extraction, have 3 working keys for c70 now, it does sometimes not read chip, then a retry always works, any idea what position does the chip read, or when during ignition?
I used that plastic UV glue, very quick and secure, peals off cleanly since its just plastic, no dry time either.

On my s60 works 100% of the time, glued right onto spare antenna ring hidden behind dash

Just put deoxit on antenna contacts to see if it reads better.

In our area ACE Hardware can cut the Volvo key but they can't do any programming so if you've got that covered, then you're good to go with ACE. It might be worth a phone call to see if they have an ACE Hardware in your area and if so, give them a ring to see if they can do laser cutting.
