Thanks for that info. I think the B4 issues is well documents for the flares and rough shifts but I"m pretty sure my car is not a candidate for that. I have to check the tranny VIN again. I can see no reason why cleaning the MAF and ETM replacement (have a new one via the recall with about 100K on it) would have anything todo with shift flares...if someone can explain the logic to me I'm all ears.
Torque mount is on my todo and I've seen several people mentioning this helping with hard shifts.

This thread from my 1st valve body rebuild on a S60AWD contains the Transgo instruction set so you can get a visual idea of what these clearances we're referring to are: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=61062

I can't find the link where others have mentioned it, but I think it was on Howards Volvo Maintenance. That also offers a lot of information.
I think that my problem was more than just the transmission, but it shows LIKE a transmission problem. First is when changing gears from reverse to drive or from stopping at a stop light to moving, the car engine revs up to like 3000 rpm then the gear engages making the car jerk like crazy. Second problem was the transmission shifting from 2-3 or 3-4 would be rough and jerk the car a bit, but more serious would be when the car is in 4 or 5th gear and then you coast slowing down, when you step on the accelerator, the engine would rev (being in neutral) and then engage causing a very scary jerk.
Cleaning the MAF and ETM definitely eliminated the reverse to drive revving and jerking. Replacing the ATF fluids reduced the hard shifting, but has not totally fixed the problem. I first changed the ATF fluid by just doing a drain and replace. Then I did another ATF change (3 months after), but used a seafoam trans tune cleaner first and then drained the transmission and put new ATF fluid. Interesting to note that after only 3 months, the ATF fluid was already dark brown. I'm not sure if this is any help to you, just my really experience and somewhat frustration. Anyway, right now my XC70 is driveable with the infrequent jerk when I am slowing down and then immediately accelerate (seems like a 3-2 solenoid).
Unfortunately I don't have the tools to do a valve body fix.

Special tools are a 18mm socket, 1/2 inch drive breaker bar and torx 40 for the pan bolts and torx 25 for the MAF removal.
The rest are pretty standard tools that woukd be in any 3/8 drive socket set. In addition you need 15mm ring and 18mm ring spanners for the cross brace bolt.
I've provided links to the Valve body replace PDF and also the Transgo valve body refurbishment guide in my posts on this thread. The links are still there.
2 drain and fills uses only 7 litres regardless of additives. It takes over12 litres of drain and fills to see a fluid change color if the fluid is particularly dirty.
