just ran a compression test and got nothing across the motor... even with oil...
next?

i dont think its flooded though, because we dont seem to get any kind of initial combustion at all, whether it sits for an hour or three days.... nothing but the starter doing any kind of movement we want...

No compression sounds like something is not right with the timing belt or (gasp) the valves. Since you checked the timing belt 3 times ...

Are the cams in the wrong place, like switched intake and exhaust? I'm not sure that is even possible. There is a little E and I among the lettering stamped into the back end of the appropriate cam, I would check that.

normally, i would assume timing as well, its the only thing that sounds right.

but we labelled them before pulling, took pictures of the orientation, and used the alignment marks, so everything checks there...

pic of the stamping?

The I of the intake cam is barely visible here at about 8:30 (not quite 9:00)
Image

And the E is less visible but evident at 2:30 (not quite 3:00)

And you lined them up with intake (distributor side) slot above, exhaust (cps side) below? I know these may seem like the obvious questions, just all I can think of ...

The shutter wheel that goes on the back of the intake cam can easily be reversed and it will have everything it needs to run but it will be sparking on the exhaust stroke.
That car will have the stamped steel reluctor and the two little rolled tabs that locate it into the slots pictured above are easy to press flat. If it ended up 1/2 turn out it will not run. Remove the cam sensor and then remove the reluctor piece and inspect for it being installed right and not having a flattened locator tab.

Hmmmm, I'll tear it down to that point when I get off work in the AM. I'm fairly certain they're in the right configuration, but I've got no problem doing anything to get this car moving. Will update in a few hours. And thanks for showing that, I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've seen the markings like that pop up anywhere...

Here are some written instructions with photos.

When the starter is cranking, the cams are turning, correct? You can either have the timing belt cover off to verify this or look into the oil filler hole to watch it turn.

Did you guys install the lifters?

Can't be the reluctor ring, unless the compression test was meaningless. So it will be good to know but methinks there is more investigating to do.

Yes the cams are turning I thought the same thing, he already posted that.

Puzzling!

Alright, sorry. Sleep got the better of me (working nights now)

Anyway, verified by part number that the cams are in their correct positions
