Ok I swapped out the two identical relays & with my fingers crossed hoping for a good result.... it stalled. Crap.
Decided to pay my Volvo dealer a visit to see if they had a fuel pump relay {behind ashtray} in stock which they did. $64.00 CAD. Installed the new relay and she run like a top. No stalling. Good for another 1/4 million miles or more.
The old relay was the original dated 1990.

Thanks so much for all your help!

Do you know how to solder? I repaired 3 fuel pump relays by re-flowing the solder on the circuit board. All the larger solder connections were cracked. I carefully pried loose the cover. I now carry 2 spare relays in the glove box. One of the relays that I repaired was dated 2005, Which was the year I purchased the car. So, they do occasionally quit working.

The FPR on my 1988 760 is different than on your 740, but the circuits are the same.

Had this exact same problem. After replacing radio suppression relay and fuel pump relay, the problem persisted. It eventually got bad enough that I had a 10 to 1 downtime ratio. (For every twenty minutes of cooling down, I was able to get another 2 minutes of run time.) So I sucked it up and had a shop replace the fuel pump (mine is a Regina with the single pump in the tank) it cost 480 with labor to remove thirteen gallons of rust filled gas water. Hasn't happened since.
