would anyone be able to answer some of the questions posted above?

1. Am I using the tester correctly? If so, should I not be seeing a light come on when testing the wires leading to the wiper motor with the ignition on and the wipers turned to low or high?
2. How can I test if FST1 or FST3 are the culprits? I tapped on them, but saw no change... the wipers would not come on.
3. I pulled the motor and assembly out as well as it was easy enough to get at. How "stiff" should the assembly be? Should the motor rotate rather easily, or is it normally really stiff... as in I have to apply considerable effort to get it to move at all?

You need to find a wiring diagram to proceed...identifying which wires carry voltage to the wiper motor.

Your failure mode would seem to indicate motor failure, though.

I have attached a pdf copy of the wiring diagram for the front wipers for the car... 2004 V70.

From what I can tell, I should be getting power on the first two wires, blue (low) and yellow (high). Is that right? So if I have the ignition turned on, the wiper control arm engaged to low, I should be able to get a light on the tester when I touch the connector attached to the blue wire... correct?

I am definitely not getting that... either on the low or high setting for either the blue or yellow wire. Am I testing something incorrectly?

Or bad CEM. Recently we've had a car with the same symptoms and CEM was the culprit.

There are three different fuses which control voltage/signals to wipers - are they all good??

With that diagram in hand, you can work backwards with that test light and check your voltage until you find where it is broken ...you are getting close now...

Three fuses? You mean 10, 13 and 16? All of those are fine. There is power to the fuse...

But are you confirming that I *should* get a light when properly grounded with my tester and touching the 2 contacts leading to the wiper motor?

Thats right. I really prefer a voltmeter over a test light because as these cars age, you often get partial electrical connections/failures which the test light isn't so useful to diagnose.

Quick question... How stiff should the wiper assembly be? It is extremely difficult to move the assembly... Feels like the linkages, or the motor, is verb stiff. If I apply a lot of force I can get it to move a little bit, but not very much.

Secondly... Is there an easy way to tell if the relays are to blame?

Good news... and some bad...

Turns out it was one of the relays, and a bad connection. The wipers are working again... well, at least the driver's side is!

The wiper arm bolt coming from the assembly has some rough looking threads, and the tightening bolt won't screw onto it. This is the passenger side only. The driver's side bolt works fine.

Anyway I can use a tap/die set to rethread so I don't need to go back to the junk-yard and get a whole assembly? Or does anyone have any other ideas?

Defintely worth tapping it, but getting one from a pick n pull shouldn't be too expensive
