If you don't know the service history of the car it is always a good idea to inspect the maintenance items because it is never wasted money: the run will run smoother and use less gas. So check plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter: these will cause a no start or the car to run rough.

Is there any codes? If not, then check ECT (the Original Volvo part fails after about 130,000km)- usually it throws a code, fuel pump relay solder joints (sounds like you checked this), cam sensor, crank sensor (less likely)

The car should be off when unplugging and re-plugging the sensor.

If it runs the same without the MAF, then the MAF is not likely the problem.

I sent you a PM.

We don't have a code scanner but was thinking about getting one. Do the one that cost around $50 or less at auto zone read the codes for these cars? I was going to get one of those but husband says they probably wouldn't work for a volvo, he thinks it probably would take a special one since it is a foreign made car.

The inexpensive OBDII code readers should work fine on a '98 Volvo (at least, they work fine on my '97, which is also OBDII compliant).
I have seen good deals on OBDII readers at Harbor Freight, especially if you bring one of the ubiquitous 20% or 25% discount coupons:

1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94

OBD II is a universal system, you should NOT be spending more than 25-30 for a reader. I bought a bunch of ebay for about 15 bucks because I send three cars to college next year....I keep one in each of the older cars

On edit - left off crucial NOT

Check the evap system for a big hose tear or hole.

Link to come.

One major leak could be responsible for all your codes!

So far we have found a hose in the area of the fuel filter that is completely disconnected from I think what you guys are saying is the rollover valve, could this be the problem?

Yep, that's it. You want to look over the whole system and get familiar with it because it is one of the typical maintenance areas of this vintage
