Well, my daughter drove her S70 GLT for probably a year with a bad head gasket. It kept loosing more and more coolant as it got worse. It was pressurizing the coolant reservoir, overflowing it, and loosing a little coolant at a time. She went from adding a little coolant monthly to adding coolant every 3 days. The whole while taking road trips 500+ miles.

Finally she took at 1,300 mile road trip and overheated the motor because she got lazy. It blew a hose (pretty much after it was out of coolant). She pulled over as soon as she seen the needle getting close to the red. After it cooled down, she got the hose repaired and drove another 800 miles before she finally got home and I did my first head gasket job.

I say all that to say that these cars are very sneaky, being able to run and run well with bad head gaskets. It is very easy to overlook a temp gauge that has creeped into the red. Even worse, if the coolant is low, and no coolant is on the sensor, it may never make the temp gauge raise even if the car has overheated.

Oh, almost forgot. Every compression test I did while chasing the problem showed good numbers.

When mine went for good on My 94,it was coolant into the cylinders. Fill it, drive for a while. let it cool, nd Pull a few plugs and check for signs of water in the cylinders. The plugs will be orange on the ceramic.
Of it does need a it's not a bad job. I did mine for under $500 including a new battery and new radiator. My machine shop Bill was $124 with a tank job and the resurfacing.
