rmmagow wrote:Thanks Kahl, All of that didn't work for me and god knows I tried. Apparently an 11MM flare wrench is only ever been use on a volvo, couldn't find one anywhere. I've got everything totally screwed up. I think I've rounded off the metal line side so bad the line will need to be replaced. This job turned into a cf very very quickly and now I'm so jammed up I'll need to bring it someplace to get it fixed. I didn't want to start cutting lines etc since I sort of figured I'd need to bring it to somebody once this line coupling acted up. so totally annoying to get hung by a straight-forward task. I'm not so much pi**ed off as I am thinking I'm just getting too old for all of this. might be a 2015 corrolla in my future (I'd rather hang myself). DAMN!!!!
I think you are correct, I haven't seen a 11mm flare wrench, but you should be able to use a 7/16".
The other end is 14mm or 9/16".

Did you use a flare wrench and it still stripped? I have to replace on of my lines, I see the outer rubber cracking.

For those facing this hurdle in the future (and I kid you not, these fittings were made up tight), here is a beefy and reasonably priced flare nut wrench set with 9,10,11,12,13,14 mm sizes which I got at Lowe's.
If you want to confirm the sizes, just enlarge on the photo.

This is the back-up tool to have on hand just in case a nut gets rounded off. This is the smallest of three sizes of these special vise grips which is about 4-3/4" long and small enough to get into tight quarters but large enough to deal with that 11mm fitting.

This tool has little other application, but when needed it will reportedly save your bacon.

As a side note, the Lowe's wrenches did the job for me. I thought they would break because the fittings were so tight, but they did not and there was no distortion of the nuts.

And to OP rmmagow, I'm 67 y.o., so do not despair. Old age and craftiness will best youth and enthusiasm every time. Having the right tools helps too.

This is first of 5 cars that I could not get the nut off. I have the Craftsmen flare nut kit in both SAE and metric. Both sets have oversized surface grip areas. I first cleaned coupling with brake cleaner then put heat on the flex hose nut. So 1 in 10 nuts could be a problem. The reflaring was no big deal after I got over the WTF freak out psychological brain melt episode. The other side came off with no problem.

I have some Craftsman box ends which drive me crazy when they omit a size or jump it to the next wrench. I'm thinking of putting them in a garage sale and getting a larger set of HF wrenches that are sized more intuitively.

I replaced a front caliper on my 99 S70. The brake hose connection confused me until I purchased a new brake hose and took a good look at the connection with the brake line. I found it was best to back the brake hose with a wrench and then turn the nut on the brake line. The brass nut with o-ring turned easily.
