That is by FAR the best fix. No disrespect to your car, but the reality is that it is not a likely theft target.
I did remove alarm software and took the siren out of my 04 V70R because I didn't want the alarm and wasn't going to waste money on a new siren. Get three keys cut on 1998 blanks using the key code and glue the one working key to the lower steering column cover in a dollop of silicone sealer

Anybody know if there is room inside the lower steering plastic cowling to glue the key on the inside? If so, how close does the key need to be to the immobilizer ring?

Check out pic 4 in cn90's ignition tumbler thread from today, it looks like plenty of room on the metal body, very close to the antenna ring. Surely you will find a place for it once you pull the lower cover off.

I think I would leave it intact, if you only have one chip/key. You're not going to lose a key, but a little chip you might.

Before you glue it. Test it with tape once you have the other keys. The orientation can be important. It should work laying below the ignition lock but it might need to be turned a certain way.
This trick has been used lots to install aftermarket remote start kits on many makes. Securing a valet key in the steering column was a couple hundred dollars or more cheaper than the module you could buy and then have programmed at dealer that did the same task.

I'm leaning toward leaving the key I have intact. Local dealer has quoted a discounted price of $17.95 per key blank & cutting for non-chipped replacements. Sound reasonable? Local hardware stores/locksmith's don't have the blank, can order it, but would be more expensive by quite a bit ($30 per).
