OP says couldn't get it to fire on ether, are you sure you have spark?
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I will look into the relay and the FPR. I have tested the injectors by disconnecting the electrical connector and plugged in a diod while cranking. The diod blinks.

I'm not sure of how much start fluid to spray, so that might also be why. I removed the idle valve hose on the inlet as well as removed the main tube from the air filter and sprayed some start fluid.

While using the OBD2 reader with ScanTool I noticed that the advance timing on 1 st cylinder was 63,5 degrees. That must be an error in the ScanTool-reader or the OBD2-tool, right?

I had the car starting yesterday for about 3 seconds after having blown warm air down the spark plug holes for 24h. But it died quickly.

What if the hydraulic lifters are not opening?

If the lifters were not pumping up, you would have a lot of clattering noise from the top end of the engine. It may run, but poorly.
Try spraying starting fluid into the vacuum tee while someone else cranks the car, unless you have a remote start switch. a one-second long shot should start the car, try it first with the fuel relay pulled so it doesn't flood.

I found another fuel pressure gauge and it´s something like 2,5-2,7 bars at the fuel rail. The main grey relay by the fan clicks when I disconnect it and the idle valve stop buzzing, so I guess the relay is in order.

i follow up the clue with the advance timing been 63,5 degrees and tested with a strobe light. It really seems to be in that vicinity around 60-70 degrees. Shouldn´t it be around 10 degrees for idle rpm?
Will look for info regarding self-testing the cam shaft sensor and the rpm-sensor. Any other ideas are welcome. Is the ECU playing trix on me?

Thanx rspi, I already had worked out that the ignition timing is wrong. I had problems starting the car a year and a half ago and had the same symptoms with the timing. A car work shop then told me it was impossible with this car (timing controlled by the ECU), so I believed them and finally got it started without really knowing why.

I had similar symptoms on our 1997 855 GLT and it was the fuel pressure regulator. I also had to replace the fuel pump, but that was many years after the regulator failed.

Did a first quick test like this: and found that I had 12V on pin 2, so I suspected the ECU/Cam sensor/cables between the two. Measured the cam sensor with an oscilloscope while cranking and saw the square wave so the sensor seems to work. Measured the cable from cam sensor pin 2 to connector under ECU pin A21 and that was OK. I must be the ECU, I hope... I´ll order one and try anyway.

I also oscilloscoped the crank sensor while at it and a sinus wave appered with a short down period, as expected.

I hope the problem is soon gone.

Ecu(s) on these cars never go bad....you're waisting time & money and you are going in a wrong way.
