I don't think you would get a CEL on a 98, maybe 99+

Meybe he didn'got a cel because both of the cams were 2 teeth off. They were synchronised.

He would have cel if only one of the cams or crank was up to 3 teeth off.

Even 850 would throw a cel for incorrect timing. In fact...every ecu controlled engine.

Ecu will try to compensate but it will inform you about that with a cel on.

His ecu was remaped by IPD,maybe that is the reason why his car didn't throw a cel.

Installed new belt / serp belt etc - car runs fine. Aligned timing where it is supposed to be. I will say, I feel more power in the bottom end now - before 2500rpm. Guess it just happened to slip the teeth and I never noticed the difference in power since I don't beat my car like a dog.

Thanks everyone for their input and quick replies.

On a side note: Do NOT buy your serpentine belts from Advanced Auto Parts. The dimensions they have listed for the belt (length) is incorrect on their website AND in their computer system. Sold me a 72.5" belt when I needed 69 (68.5 fits but its snug).

Glad to hear you worked out the timing issue.

I *believe* the serpentine belt routing changed sometime during the late 90s for 850/S/V70s to give more surface area on the alternator. Wait for response from one of the folks more versed in this particular Volvo..

Correct - there *are* 2 ways to route the accessory belt. I used the newer routing, which comes to aprox
69 inches.

Thanks again, ya'll are awesomes!

It's possible you may need to replace the crank pulley.
If the layers separate or slip due to a worn harmonic balancer, the timing marks, which are usually stamped into the front of the pulley, can shift and thus throw off the placement of the timing marks.

He was lining the crank up by the marks on the timing belt sprocket, the harmonic balancer/pulley isn't in play.

Villagepc, has your econ perked up since you corrected the cam timing?

OP- did you have this car tuned or did PO? Cams may have been retarded to move the torque curve, and could be part of the remap. Do you have any paper on the build? IPD may be able to tell you what was spec'd if you can give a P.O. number or ECU number.
Current Volvos:

2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
