(water pump, tensioners pulleys and timing belt took me 3 hours from start to end and I am not a mechanic - just a computer programmer with some basic tools - and i had never done this on a Volvo before - although I've done it several times on Land Rovers. There's really nothing to it.)

Why would you want to scare Alex into believing it's a week-long job? I don't get it.
Amen...
That's what I was thinking... I don't think I have ever had a mechanical job that took that long... defiantly not a water pump...

Glad the rest of you guys support my mechanical ability :-) hahaha

Three hours or a day depends on whether this is the first interference TB someone has ever done--or the third or fourth. Rich Kelley, the professional Volvo tech who wrote the Bay 13 DIYs over on volvospeed.com, suggests allowing a day for TB R&R if this is someone's first time doing it.

Reported times for job completion is about like gas mileage--relative. No need for folks to get their shorts all knotted up.

Any recommendations for serpentine belts that work/don't work well on this car?

Dayco? Gatorback?

I like Dayco.

On your '93. If it has not been done already, you can simply use a '94.5 to '98, larger belt, and tensioner pulley.
You do not have to put the smaller old style '93 type back on.

The bottom of this page explains my learning experience with exactly what you are about to do.

Ok, then three hours it is for the TB job!:) Im sure some will say they did it in less time.

PCV, the next day after lunch and all done:) There was a tech guy in the forums he had a method to do it in 1.5 hours, but he didnt want to share how he did that so fast. He said it was his trade secret.

Good Luck with that!

Well, if you do them both at the same time, you can attribute the hours to the more laborious part.

Honestly, I couldn't decide what to charge myself.
For the wagon.
For the wagon.
I had to wait for the water pump delivery to install the timing belt.

It all seems better for the hours.
It all seems better for the hours.
This was over a four day period, but while access was there, Timing belt was an hour. With Water pump and pulleys.
PCV was completed in steps as re assembly went on, so allocation of hours is irrelevant on this one.

My sedan was the first. It took a full day of replacing burnt and/or broken vacuum lines before I could bolt on the intake manifold.
If your '93 was abused more than this rescue, I would be surprised.

Hey, I hope you enjoy the Photos, owning a '93 feel free to ask. I have been through every nut and bolt.

When you do the timing belt use nothing but O/E parts. This is NOT an area where you want to skimp on parts. Also, whoever did the job in 3 hours I would like to know how you got the old water pump gasket off so fast? That alone took me almost 2 hours. You want to use an Aisin water pump. It's a Japanese company that makes the O/E pump for Volvo. In fact, when you buy one you will see the Volvo name has been ground away. When you put it all back together make sure you torque the bolts for the water pump. FCP has a good video on youtube that will walk you through each step.

Good Luck.

The only part in my installations that was not OEM was the Gates Blue Racing belt, of which I have no problem.
Aisin pump, as pictured. Aisin hydraulic tensioner. INA pulleys.

PCV Valve took about 2 hours, maybe... Hardest part was that bottom bolt, but listening to guys here I went out and bought some wobble extensions and pivots. Made it a lot easier, the duct tape trick worked awesome too! (Taping the pivot joint to keep it fairly straight). Ill post some pictures.
