Is the temperature set to automatic? If you use the manual mode, make sure the Air recirculation button has the light on Manual.
On the center right of the temp control panel, there is something like a small grid. The cabin temp sensor is just behind this grid. Careful as the sensor is very fragile. Try blowing some air through the grid.

We charge 5500 USD here for diagnostics.

Okay, just kidding. Great deal!!

Make sure you vacuum out the little grill on the dash that detects cabin temperature mentioned above- look on the AC panel for that and clean the old dead birds out of it.

I also don't think you are over 65F in NH yet

Well, we've barely touched 65F in NH yet, so we'll see how things go once the warmer weather comes. But, today there is a new problem. The check engine light came on and a message saying "engine system service needed". I tried to read the code with my code reader but only got a "link error" message. So, I went to autozone and they read a P0101 code, probably a mass airflow sensor issue. So my questions are:
- any suggestions for a code reader that will work with this car? I have two a centech and an Innova and neither worked.
- do I need to go to the dealer to have the "engine system service needed" message erased?
- should I just try cleaning the MAF or replace it?

My AUTELs seem to work ok. It does sound like a MAF problem but try the connections and cleaning first.

You need one that reads CAN networks

OK, I cleaned the MAF sensor using MAF cleaner, reset the code by disconnecting the battery (did the +/- connect also). Ran a few times, no check engine light, message gone. My question now is, is a MAF sensor issue something the car would pick up right away, or will I have to do a certain number of "drive cycles" before I know if it's really fixed?

It will probably code again pretty soon if it is weak. It is not drive cycle related though.

Well, the check engine light's back on, so it's off to the shop (where I bought it) and we'll see what they come up with. They tell me the P0101 MAF sensor code is almost never the sensor, but probably a vacuum leak somewhere.

With age and mileage you will have several items due for maintenance.

After 136,000 miles on ours, spark plugs, ignition coils, MAF, and HO2 sensors were replaced with respective error codes. Now at 156,000 miles with zero issues.

The serpentine belt and tensioner, transmission and engine mounts replacements cleared any and all shake and vibration coming from engine -- much quieter with so many miles.

A 1000 mile road trip is no effort.

A shop should have a tool that will measured the reported MAF flow to see if it is good.

I have cleaned a couple of MAFs successfully on VW and BMW but success rate is under 50%

On MAFs:

Don't buy used or Off brand, Bosch only. If it's a lot cheaper than the others on ebay, it's cheap junk and won't work, even if it's advertised as Bosch.
