P1017 looks like an internal ECM failure code. Interesting that Alldata does not list it.

Next time I blow through town I'll bring the AUTEL and see if we can pull the Volvo codes, but either way I think you are looking at a new ECM

Is your code P1017 or 0117? Looks like 0117 is the ECT, but 1017 is an ECM fault? That wouldn't get cleared no matter what cooling components you change. Maybe try an ECM remove clean connector and reseat?

edit-oops yeah what the mod said while I was researching online!
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Lights would flicker on start-up. Mechanic said he'd only ever seen that before with a "shorted battery." I replaced the battery with an Everstart Maxx from Walmart yesterday (cheaper than an Interstate from my mechanic). I upgraded to the Group 48 (about $127 after core refund for the Interstate corpse I dropped off) from a 47, so I've got more cold cranking amps. The car jumps to life now and now funky codes/stuttering appear to be gone. I'm going to take it to work tomorrow for a highway test drive, but I'm thinking we're good to go. Thanks for the input.

Yet another ECM fault that was something else. Glad you nailed it. Bad battery is final diagnosis if it sticks??

Well. . . it wasn't the battery. New (used) ECU on the way. Any suggestions as to where to get it cloned?

I think that Lee took his ecu to Lucky ARD.
