Exactly what I used as well. Not from Harbor Freight, of course, but I have that exact set from another brand. :)

That damn bolt. I had to buy a 17mm stubby wrench for it, but I would advocate buying that 1/4 breaker and wobbler or whatever other tools you need to get it. Or even just buy a new car instead of taking that bolt out. I hate that bolt.

Don't be an idiot like me and try to crack those hoses loose so you can take the manifold out. You can't, and you'll just end up spilling coolant all over your alternator.

:lol: :lol: :lol:

What threw me off at first is that all the videos and walkthroughs I found online were for '98 V70's or for 850's but they all said "yeah your '99 will be basically the same, just has the ETM instead of the older style throttle." Once I got into it though I basically had to throw their procedures out the window because my engine seems like a different animal.

Thanks for the suggestions about the wobble extensions and/or universal joint - just to be safe I've ordered both for in-store pickup tomorrow :D (Craftsman/Sears... I have a personal rule that if I might need it twice I'm not going to buy it from Harbor Freight)

And so the adventure continues... tomorrow!

It turns out that I should have paid more attention to the recommendation to get quarter inch extensions instead of 3/8 - I just couldn't get the 3/8" stuff to fit through to the bolt, but once I put a U-joint on the end of a 6" long 1/4" drive extension, it was easy as pie. Easier than pie.

j-dawg, I didn't realize what bolt you were talking about until I got down there and saw it. A 17mm stubby would have been really handy but I ended up getting it off by unhooking the intake manifold first, then twisting it up to where I could get at the bolt easier. It needed a little PB Blaster but then I used a 17mm box end wrench to get it loose, and somehow managed to get a ratchet in there to remove it the rest of the way. I had enough room for the handle to click once between loosening pulls, so it was slow going but much better than trying to use an end wrench!

Photos and more coming later tonight but right now I gotta get back out there and put everything back together (!)

It goes together a lot more easily than it comes apart.

That banjo bolt is not, I don't think, present on the NA models. Another maintenance curse of the besnail'd whiteblock.

I'm still putting it back together; the trouble I'm having is that somehow I got the intake manifold off without separating the fuel line at the quick connect (I unhooked it at the fuel rail after the retaining clip got bent after the #5 injector stayed in the engine while I was trying to remove the fuel rail... yeah, it was a whole thing.)

Anyway, I just cannot get the intake manifold back down around that stupid fuel line. I tried using two flathead screwdrivers to separate the quick release but no luck. Any ideas?

::edit::
turns out what it needed was a little more fiddling and a lot of prayer :D

Any recommendations for getting the oil out of the crannies atop the engine? My next thing to do is going to be spark plug replacement and re-looming the coil wires because the old looming (what's left of it) crackles more than a bowl of Rice Krispies.

::edit2::
j-dawg, I came across what appears to be some documentation from Volvo suggesting the "correct" way to get at that banjo bolt and the bottom-left intake mounting bolt is to (wait for it) remove the power steering pump. :!: So I guess that's an option too.

You can buy quick release tools for the fuel line at hf or just about any auto parts store. I forgot to pick one up before I started so I just used a Bic pen body and split it down the side and slipped it over the fuel line and it tripped the quick release mechanism. Make sure you release the fuel pressure at the Schrader valve on the right side of the fuel rail first. Shouldn't be much, just a small cup or a rag will catch it.

Sounds about right. As I recall, my procedure was to rotate the fuel line on the fitting until it was as vertical as it would get and then have the manifold do a little ballet to thread the fuel line through the hole between 2 and 3. I also recall the holding of breath and crossing of fingers, because that line got pushed around quite a lot in the process.

That Bic trick is really clever Rondo!

j-dawg, I pushed the line around a lot on mine too but other than scuffing some of the paint off the outside I don't think it got bent at all.

Sorry for the delay in updates everybody (because I know you were all just holding your breath in excitement, lol) but I was on vacation (using a different vehicle :( ) from the 18th-22nd and have been catching up with everything since then. Work on the V70 will resume by this weekend at the latest!

In the meantime if you're bored you can read this blog entry I wrote about meeting another Volvo owner recently: http://www.peter-metzger.com/blog/
