Tensioner on '95 cars are hydraulic.

I've done a lot of heads this year. lol I usually get them from the junk yard. Try not to get one that has signs of replacement unless the car is wrecked.

Yes, the tensioner is hydraulic and in perfect condition. The belt itself had small cracks in it, almost like a dry rot. I'm thinking that although the belt was in service only a few years, it might have been an old belt that was sitting around on a shelf before installation. Didn't have a chance to get head off due to family activities, but I'll update when I do. Thanks for the responses!

Exhaust valves might be ok. It's intake valves that kiss the piston. FCPEuro is where I go for these sorts of things. It takes a few hours to pull the head and a maybe a day to get it all back together. I had the same thing happen to a 98XC with a 30k mile reman head and 30k mile 2 year old tbelt... And the AC worked perfectly in that car! It sucked. Apparently the belt was walking for some reason. Never figured it out. Replaced it with a 00 V70XC. The post 98 cars are much better to work on IMHO. Far fewer hoses and crap in the way.

Hmmmm....every timing belt i saw have stamped date of production and a "Best install untill...."date on them.
This is something that owners need to check when buying timing belts.Just to be safe.

Last time i was replacing timing belt which was about 7 years old and around 90k km on it...looked like new.Hardly had a single crack on it.

That is very early for a failure, do you live in a hot dry zone? Yes, Dayco in general is a good supplier, but Conti would get the exact loads on the belt from Volvo; hence they can optimize the design.

At 115,000km on it, belt still had lots of life to it, only minor cracks.

I didn't know Continental was the OEM for Volvo timing belts. That's the one I'm going with, then. I really want to take a look at my belt now. The PO claimed the top end was rebuilt, which leads me to believe the t-belt was done, but I have no paperwork, so I can't be sure...

Its completely possible to do a top end and re-use TB parts - but that is sad, sad mechanizing usually.

That's what I'm arguing to my dad and cousin, who would be helping me with the project. They keep telling me it's fine, but I'd rather not risk it.

Pulleys and tensioners shouldn't spin freely as you described. They should be very quiet and stop under the load of the grease inside the seals. If the tensioner pulley or idler spins freely there's your answer. Also you need to compress the hydraulic tensioner with a clamp or vice to see if hydraulic fluid is leaking from the seal.

Was the plastic spacer still fitted on top of the hydraulic tensioner? Also was the belt guide around the crank still fitted with long bolts that almost touch the belt?
