The picture fooled me (not hard) as it is upside down. The center bar should have a thick nylon sleeve on it that the latch assembly in the tailgate clamps around. When this comes loose the latch assembly is loose and won't close properly. The whole assembly can be replaced and is not too expensive from the dealer.

This is how it looks about 5 months after wrapping with electrical tape. No idea how many layers, probably 5-10. I found my trunk to be improperly catching until I had added enough layers of tape.

Wow that really worked. Trunk closes and latches much easier now....unfortunately the light is still on!
