Another update: I have still not seen a BPPS code or engine system service required light so that's good. My CEL came back on and I just had them read. It is only a cylinder one misfire now. It came up twice that there was a misfire in cylinder one and those were the only codes. Now it has me thinking it could be something really bad. As I've said, I've replaced the coils, plugs, and checked the wires. Any thoughts?
So I never replaced my temp sensor or thermostat and I have not had a CEL since my last problem. The last code I had read was a cylinder one misfire and that was the only code. I did a fuel injector cleaner and I notice a difference but the CEL came back on today. Car runs fine and nothing seems out of the ordinary. My idle is starting to surge up and down like the ETM is failing and I have yet to replace the original on this car. I'm lost as to what the CEL could be.

It might be worth checking to see if you have exhaust gases in your coolant; there is a small chance you have a (currently) miniscule head gasket leak on number 1 cylinder that is dripping coolant into your cylinder. You can also compare the plug condition from that cylinder to the others to maybe be able to see if you can see any difference, but the gas analysis is a more accurate indicator. Unfortunately, I have some first-hand experience with this on my 2004 s60.

Do an inter-web search for "test for exhaust gas in coolant" and you should get links for tools (under $50) to test and also some other links of discussion for diagnosing such an internal leak. I believe there might be some YouTube videos as well. You can also do a leak-down test. If this really is just a very minor leak at this time, a compression test might not be sensitive enough to give you a good indication.ADriggs26 wrote:How would I go about checking for gases in my coolant?

Swap the coil from cylinder 1 to cylinder 2 and see if the misfire moves.
Were they genuine or Bosch coils?

After you try the coil swap, if the problem doesn't move, move the spark plugs from 1 to 2.

I've already done a coil swap and plug swap. It didn't change anything. The light has been intermittent the last few days and I take it to the dealer on Tuesday. my ideal has been weird too. When the engine is heated up to the optimal temperature, the RPM will rise and fall by several hundred RPM. It will hover around 750-800 but drops to 400 and surges to 1500 or so. I've noticed it more lately. I've cleaned MAF sensor and made sure throttle body is clean. Could this idle be part of the misfire?

The misfire is more likely to be causing the idle issues than the other way around as the computer is trying to compensate.ADriggs26 wrote:Could this idle be part of the misfire?
