It isn't too useful as an emergency brake, not enough brake action.

You probably do need it to pass CT inspection though.

We use our parking brakes whenever the car is used, but not in the driveway where they sit for days, especially in winter
Unfortunately, CT does not do safety inspections anymore :o . They shut down their facilities years ago, and it still boggles my mind.

I agree, the parking brake needs to be functioning properly, no question in my mind. I'm going through the pain right now with my XC, replacing everything including the cables. It will be worth it in the end.

A little sidenote: Our driveway is on a slight incline. When my mother in law comes to visit with her Buick, she never uses her parking brake. Then when she leaves she has the hardest time getting the thing out of park because there is so much pressure on the tranny brake. She actually asked me a few times to shift it because she physically was not able to. I keep telling her that someday something will break. It's there for a reason, use it!

After 3-1/2 years I finally pulled my hubs and fixed mine. It was much easier than I expected. After reading dozens of post about broken cables I was afraid that mine was. Glad I did it.

I once had a car rolling away from me in my driveway. Slowly going towards the house. I had to choose between the front bricks and garage. A parking/emergency brake would have been nice.

This is all great to hear. I've been putting it off for some time as well. PO removed all handbrake components, short of the handbrake lever itself, gonna be a long road to recovery.

cn90 - you're not supposed to stop the car using the e-brake only...- S
- What I meant is using parking brake in an emergency should the main brake fails. Try this on a brand-new car: with car travelling at 30mph, put it in neutral, apply the parking brake, you will see it is more or less useless. The parking brake's braking power is about 5% that of the main brake, in the evtn of brake failure, you may as well shift to L (for AT), or 2nd gear (for MT).

- "Illegal" in what sense?
* Stop the car in an emergency should the main brake fails? Well see the above, it is close to worthless in a moving car.
* So, it is down to your driveway, if the parking brake fails, then either the AT pawl or the MT 1st gear should stop the car even on an incline. If not then some brick or shrub damage, no big deal, basically no danger to the public.

- "Irresponsible" in what sense?
* I have spent so many hours with this "useless" parking brake, I am not spending more time with this crap.

I would not want to put the added pressure and wear on the parking pawl inside the transmission. E-Brake repairs are tedious, but not overly difficult.

I think you're pulling numbers out of your... ehrm... backside. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by trying it on a brand new car. Most new cars use the emergency brakes in a whole other way than the standard pull-string-to-brake you'll find in our 850s and older V70s. New cars will often use a system where the parking brake engages under 7 mph or so, to assist in stopping when necessary. Over 7 mph, ABS/ESP systems work together to assist in the braking. I have no idea where you get 5% from, but shifting your L or 2nd gear will not stop your car. For the most part, 2nd gear in MT is good for pretty high speeds...

From what you're writing, I'm not sure you've ever had a working e-brake/parking brake/handbrake - whatever you want to call it.

"Illegal" in the sense as "against the law". For instance, in CT, you're not allowed to sell a car w/o a working parking brake. In Europe (yes, ALL of Europe), you'll fail safety inspections.

* Stop the car? E-brake on our cars should be able to lock the back wheels. That'll certainly stop you. Braking power is less on the back wheels, of course, since we've got engines and weight at the front. I'm sure you've noticed.
* Basically no danger to the public, huh? So a rolling car + toddler isn't really anything to worry about? That's dangerous advice right there, cn90.

"Irresponsible" in the sense of everything I've already written. Danger of rolling cars, danger to people and property, illegal in A LOT of areas, etc, etc. I'll say it again - if you've got a failing parking brake, then chances are it's you that's failed, not the brakes.

I kind of can't believe we're actually discussing the pros and cons of a safety feature. I'm not going to participate in this anymore - my position on this is crystal clear, I think.

Sommerfeldt,

You like to insult people and I can see that.

You completely miss my points. The parking brake's braking power is very weak, barely able to stop a moving car.

On a driveway, yes, it is handy.

That is about it.

I am a responsible car owner, but the S70 parking brake system repair at this age (18 years old) in my case is worthless:
- I have a flat driveway
- I have an AT
- I have no inspection in my state.
- I have no time to replace the cables.

And BTW, I am the one that wrote the parking brake DIY FYI.

Where is your high-horse "illegal", "irresponsible" non-sense?

I would argue its called a parking brake for a reason. While I don't think it matters who wrote what, there are a couple parking brake write ups, not just yours, cn90.

Let's all play nice please.

Unlike old cars, modern cars having sudden complete brake failure is so rare that minimalist maintenance makes the emergency function of the Parking brake obsolete.

With a standard or hills, you need it.

Your relationship with government regs, lawyers, insurance companies is personal and better suited for other Fora.
