Stiff throttle

I recommend you disconnect the throttle shaft going from the throttle body to the cable pulley shown in the picture and then see how easy the pulley turns and how quickly it springs back.

If it sticks or is slow at all you need to spray a very good penetrating lubricant like PB Blaster all around the pulley especially near the clip at the pulley pivot area and really work it in until it snaps back instantly.

I recently was driving a 1996 850 wagon with a stiff throttle and i decided to really step on it to see how this newer to me car would go and the throttle stuck in the nearly wide open position i had to slam on the poorly working brakes as hard as i could and was fortunately able to get off the road without having an accident, i am shaking rite now just thinking how bad that could have been.

Please check it ASAP.

Thank you for the advice, luckily the throttle body is quite snappy now, after lubing it with an ample amount of silicone lubricant. That's terrifying that something like that happened to you, good thing you were able to think on your feet.

Out of the 2 Volvo's I've owned along with many other vehicles. I've noticed that these cars are always heavy on the throttle, not necessarily binding up or anything. Both are very smooth operation, just take a little more force which I've grown to like it. I just don't like driving other vehicles now because I give it way too much throttle on take off.
