You want it as close to the HOT line as possible
Again, the engine needs to be running at least 30 minutes and driving it around a bit, helps even more.
Overfilling can be as bad as under filling
I've had Volvos that won't even move being under filled by hust half a bottle

As above, engine always running (in P) and car been driving for quite a bit, especially in the cold season. Reading the dipstick with the engine off or after driving only a few minutes is completely wrong.

Sorry I forgot I made the post. I did a drain/fill and adding a 1/2 quart seemed to do the trick (totaled 3 quarts), and got my fluid to a less scary shade of brown 8) . Once the snow is gone and I have some time I'll do another fill, figure i'll do one every month. A small thing is i replaced the crush washer when replacing the plug, on each fill should i replace the crush washer or can I just reuse it? I'm only unsure since it hasn't been on for all that long and it seems like a waste to toss it that quickly.

As for the leak I'm thinking of getting some dye leak stuff, had quite a bit of trouble of finding any because of the way the pan is situated. No drips though.

A drain and fill will usually take 3.5 quarts
You really need to read the HOT level properly
