I thought that 2000 and later cars (including '99)have CAN protocol and replacement parts like instrument cluster, abs unit,ecu,tcu,ECC....etc should be mated to a car in order to work.
Am i missing something here?

I thought so too. If the clock electronics pop out of the DIM, it probably doesn't need software marriage, but swapping a DIM on a 2000 will require the full ceremony.

Yes in hindsight the DIM has VIN info so you'd need at least matching ECM and ETM with the a matching firmware version to the ECM (though this may be the same as the donor car if you're lucky) . I'm on my 3rd ABS module from a similar model on my 2000 V70 due to testing and selling them. The same ABS part number as V70/S70 was on the early S80s also. TCM is not VIN coded (already swapped one out for testing in my 2000 V70). ECC may give a config error but will still work.

If you switch clusters, your mileage readout will change. I would do my best to replace just the clock portion if possible. Grab a cluster at a junk yard and take a look and see if it's even feasible. Or just stick one of these on your dash and forget about it!! Image

Instrument cluster code readout will tell you what's going on.
If you don't have Vida, you will need to visit a "stealership" to read the codes for you.

I know this is old but I just came across it. The clock in my 01 C70 doesnt move. I was thinking about replacing the cluster then saw the post to use VIDA, which I have. Where would I look under it? It's not like there will be directions for my problem.

TIA

Erik
