Interesting, my '98 had constant power, so it would work when the car was off, but my 2000 requires the ignition on.

I fitted one to my 00 V70R from a junkyard. Battery started to go flat all the time. Dealer traced it down to an issue inside the recently installed Homelink visor drawing power all the time. Removed it an all was good again.

This has me thinking that maybe the issue of a possible difference between the 98 and 00 might have been the issue. Either way, how stupid is it to have this staying live like on later Volvo's. In what universe is that a good idea? I refuse to use those and still use the removable units so if the car is left outside it is brought into the house.

I get it from a security standpoint, but it's awfully convenient to be able to reach into my car and hit the garage door opener without turning on the ignition. The first thing I do in any car I buy is add Homelink if it does have it lol. Whether it's on the mirror, visor, overhead console, etc. it's a must have for me.

I think the always on problem is a feature. I often use it to open or close the garage when I am outside. My 2001 E320 Mercedes has Homelink, but it needs the key on.

So not much of a burglar deterrent. Break your car window and into your house. How many lock the house to garage door? But hey, all your tools are in there so they can find something to break the door open and no one will know. Handy but silly. Put a keypad in on the outside of the door. At least it is more of a deterrent.

It is for me, up there with the other stupid idea in Canada of having your daylight running lights on at the front of your car only, and then the dash lights come on when it gets dark. So you have a bunch of cars running around with no rear lights on at night. Marvelous!

Add that to P80 cup holders that throw your cup on the floor and the contents into the electrics of your center console.

The world is full of geniuses!

Yup, that's what I would always do with my '98 when I had it.
