There's a 99R in a yard near me. It had some damage around the rt frt wheelwell. trans would cost about $75.00 plus shipping etc... might be worth the gamble?
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Get the P2 - T5, good enough performance and much cheaper parts.

You make a very good suggestion mecheng! Those engines can be upgraded with a 'tune' and no complex AWD systems to go wrong or the additional weight that brings too. If you can find a manual (did they make one?) then that would be excellent as the autos are limited in the power they can support.

After much consideration, I finally took the dive on an 06 R (S60). First car I ever owned newer than 1999. Anyway I am hoping for the best, expecting the worst ... In terms of reliability my impression is the P2 and the P80 are very similar, but just about everything on the P2 costs more to fix. So on any P2 R purchase it is especially critical to be very disciplined about finding with with good maintenance records and you *must* take it to an experienced shop before purchase.

Yes, the pricey 4C shocks are required for the P2R, no way around it. The AWD parts are considered wear items and will start failing in the 150k neighborhood, don't fool yourself into thinking you can dodge that bullet. It's not going to be a cheap car to own and yes you can save on the AWD expense by going with a T5 FWD.

After much reading I decided to try to find an 07 (first choice) or 06 (second choice). Looked at a really nice 06 manual but it needed a clutch too, had to draw the line. Compromised on a well maintained 06 auto. With selling price adjusted for a bad angle gear, we are driving it FWD until I decide to fix it. :D The good news is the angle gear went out about 100k, so the rest of the AWD only has 100k on it.

I would like to thank everyone for the advice. Needed a car quickly and could not find a good volvo so I purchased something that is almost as exciting as a fridge with no beer in it (es330 lexus).

Now I need to get rid of the V70R and would rather not just send it to the junk yard if there is someone that is interested in fixing it or needs the parts. It is a laser blue 1999 with a tan interior, the body is in good condition with no dents or rust and the interior shows the usual wear (320k on the car). The tires are pirelli P4s with about 50% remaining. It has a 2.4 of about 2001 vintage in it with 180000 miles and I have a 2.3 T8 engine that may be good (long story) with about 120k on it that will go with the car. Everything (except for the transmission) still works, the rear driveshaft is not in it but I have all of the parts, just did not replace it after the engine swap 1.5 years ago. If anyone that you know may be interested in the car, please let me know. I am located about 20 miles south of Omaha, NE.

Thanks,

Chris
