Your 2002 will have variable valve timing which means the cam sprocket moves relative to the cam. You have a few more steps to put this back together compared to a fixed cam car.

We have some threads on this and also stuff in the VRD

it got dark and I'm heading out of town for work but I almost have it together. Need to install the timing belt etc. but the hard work is done. I'll post back next weekend when I'm back in town and have time to work on it.

Research preloading the sprockets for when you reinstall the belt, that's important. If you just line up the marks I don't think it will interfere, but it will throw a cam code.

I'm not positive forgetting the preload is safe, so don't risk it.

hmm, I can do that. I did end up ordering cam tool to keep them in place since I've got VVT and I'm sure that getting the belt around them will most likely want to make them move despite my "homemade" setup. I miss the good old days though.... my first car was a 60 bug and it was such an easy vehicle to work on. So were my Mopar vehicles, 383's & 318's.

That thing you could swap an engine with a screwdriver and a pliers. Good old days

Yeah, but bottom ends last 100k , and valves/heads even less...vs 300k for P80s

I love my Beetle, but it's no Volvo...

:-)

I. Forgot to issue the Swedish horns to Juniorette for shutting the engine off after the oil warning and saving the engine...well done!!

yes, good old days and double yes to my 11 yr old for noticing the light and taking action!! I'm back at it now and I opened up my kit that I ordered and it doesn't have any instructions I see how to use it if you remove both cam sprockets but I will tool around on the web but I'm a bit concerned that I wasn't fully aware of how to set up your sprockets prior to removing the timing belt. I turned clockwise to align the two cam marks to my plastic belt cover and confirmed that my crank was lined up below and I actually went counter clock wise to align as perfect as I could, but just a 1/8" or so. Now, my homemade cam lock slipped a bit and the left cam (VVt cam) moved a few teeth by mistake but I moved it back to alignment with the cover. before I put it all back together please confirm that as long as bottom is TDC and the two cams line up, am I good to reassemble? Once together, rotate timing belt a few revolutions by hand to confirm that my marks line up? Thanks,

i will say that my vida and it's directions/repair notes at times differ from what I'm reading on these forums as well as even my components don't always align with diagrams seen on vida or forums.

Stop.

Do not pass go.

Do not turn that engine over.

The VVT heads must be preloaded, you can't time them by lining up the marks statically like 1998 and earlier

well, I put it all back together and it fired right up and runs great.......except the leak slowly came back. I soaked the entire area with a can of brake clean and then using my compressor blew everything clean and dry and started it back up and it's looking like my intake cam seal is leaking, not the exhaust vvt on my left but the forward cam. Really bummed but it's part of owning these volvo's.

All that being said, I am now seeing abscate's post about preloading my vvt exhaust cam. I guess just because all my timing marks line up and it idles nicely it's Not actually fixed?
