It seems like the rear lid key comes and go with trim levels not just model years.

My 1999 has the key (I think all p80s andbastard 99-00 have key in tailgate?)

My 2005 has nothing, just handle release

My admins 2004 has handle plus key slot

I read here some 2002 models have no key

Overall the rear locking system has worked well for us on our 2002 XC70 and my daily driver 2001 V70 T5. The rear handle always seems to work. Occasionally being an older car I need to unlock twice to get the rear latch to work.

I do like how the doors can be unlocked from the inside even when central locking is on (at least the front doors can when the child locks are on)

Recently in local news we had an 8 yo child trapped in a Kia Carnival for 6 hours on a hot day due to what I assume is central locking making all door handles child-proof. And a couple of weeks ago a local late build Lamborghini driver who was locked in his own vehicle when his battery went flat. He was lucky his phone wasn't also flat.

They should put awindow breaking hammer inside, like in buses

This topic makes me remember when I opened the trunk on my S60 to put some stuff inside, without first unlocking the car. By habit, i first dropped the keys inside the trunk, got the stuff inside, then forgot about the keys and shut the trunk close.

30 min later some helpful guy arrived with a door opening kit, once inside the car I flipped the rear arm rest, then forced the plastic cover behind (it has a lock at the top) to slide my hand and grab the keys.
