sounds like a rotating part is out of balance or the new engine mount (you name it pad) has an issue. Maybe a CV joint got dismantled or the axle is not pushed all the way into the transmission? It wasn't doing it before the repairs so I don't see a problem with the other engine mounts. A rotating part with a certain mass would be axle, tire, wheel. Very easy to check the axle for play without removing it. You can then rotate the tires front - rear but the chances new tires are deformed is really slim. Still a chance the garage missed balancing them, but it will only show at speeds above 30mph if I'm not wrong.

Oragex, thank you for the insight about the rotating mass...I tend to agree. Volvo is sure “proud” of their cv $hafts, but if it gets my hotrod back on the road, I’m for it. The pad (Volvo’s term for the mount found in the right wheel well) was definitely in need of replacement as the rubber had broken down. Great video, I appreciate your attaching it to your post.

Thanks for the reply.
I don't mean to hijack your topic, just looking to share experiences:
I recently changed out my OEM axles for two used ones that looked good. Still have vibrations.
Wondering whether it might be the steering ball joints (there is a 'groan' (but no clicking!) coming from the front left when I steer (full lock) to the right.
Could this be the steering ball joint?I do see some play at both steering ball joints, the left one is worst.
Could this also be the cause of my vibrations?
Will look into state of control arm bushings as well.

For your info: On my car, changing out the front and lower right engine mount helped A LOT! The car is much quieter and shakes much less. I had interior trim rattling around before changing the engine mounts, and now the interior trim is quiet. Steering and seat also 'feel' more quiet.
Replacing the top engine/torque mount (on top of the engine) also helped reducing a 'clunky feel' while shifting and accelerating.

Joost- no apology necessary,l just don’t know that you will get responses under my topic title. Regarding replacing your engine mounts though, what type of sensations where you having at the steering wheel or in the vehicle while sitting at Idol? The reason I ask, is that I do not have anything occurring while I am sitting at idle, only while I am moving. Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the reply.

Main reason to tackle the top mount was a "clunk" I heard and felt when changing from P to D, P to R, R to D, but also when going up or down a hill. It being worn out basically allowd the engine to tip back and forth a good few centimeters (visible when having test person shift between gears and driving slowly with hood open). Replacing the mount reduced the clunk by 90%.

Reason for replacing lower front and right engine mount was: a vibration felt at all speeds, albeit most noticeable at about 40 mph.
Only after reading on this forum about other users having similar issues, I realized that vibrations at idle had also become more noticeable than when I bought the car 30K km ago. I didn't notice this before I started paying attention to it. Replacing these mounts significantly reduced vibrations and noise, both when driving (primary reason to replace) but as added benefit also when idling (e.g. at a light).

Now, there still is a vibration most noticeable at 40 mph. Felt most in passenger's feet and seat as well as through steering wheel.

My best guesses:
- bent rim (I did hit a bump really hard a few months ago) Will swap wheels front to back this weekend to rule this out.
- wishbone replacement needed? Bushings?
- strut bushings shot (will check this weekend)
- I know I have play in steering joints, this needs fixing, just not sure whether related. Would like to combine repair with struts if necessary because otherwise I will have to get it aligned multiple times.

Woo hoo!! Replaced passenger CV axle and no more shaking! All I I can think of is that sometime during the front end work I was doing, I somehow did something to the CV joints. Replaced the axle today and she is running smoooooth!

My passenger CV was making the car shake bad on the highway when I bought it 2 years ago. Replaced long time ago, I kept the original axle shaft. I'm pretty sure it was the carrier bearing responsible for the shake. Does anyone know whether that bearing can be replaced by itself (and where to get a new OE or better bearing)? I'd love to put the OE axle back on the car. The axle I got from Napa got slop on the inner joint ever since I punched on the gas pedal from a stop. Ever since then I'm sort of hesitant to stomp on it like that as I'm afraid the axle shaft isn't up to the task and might break.

It can be replaced although Volvo say it can't. Carrier bearing is silly expensive (I think about $130 or more US).

The dealer foreman was able to remove the bearing for me with a puller they have and I then re-fitted a new one using brute force and a piece of metal fence round post the right diameter. If you use the post method for install, buy a cap for it first before hammering it.

It does not have a part number listed for it but it is the same one used for -98 V70 and 850's.
