Actually, according to Volvo you never have to replace coolant. It's supposed to last the entire life of the car as long as it is the Volvo OEM coolant. Albeit that's what Volvo wrote regarding autotrans fluid as well....
Anyhow, every 3 years sounds a bit exaggerated, at least if you use the Volvo coolant which is supposed to contain highly efficient anti corrosion stuff.

"Life time of the car" until that term is defined by ANY car manufacturers, I'll keep changing the coolant on my 23 year old 400k 850.


Most new car owners don't keep their car for more than 3-5 years.

Buy/lease is nearly split equally overall, so the average car is probably first driver for 4.5 years, just like you said



Car companies sell on " you don't gave to replace anything because we are so awesome...we cheapskates who want 20 years replace all fluids on a new-to-you Volvo immediately of course

Lifetime = Just beyond the warranty. lol I never was big on coolant flush & replacement. I try to do it every 150,000 miles now.

This lack of maintenance may be ok in warmer climes but where it is cold, first thing I do is replace it when I buy a car and stage 0 the car. I work on the assumption (which is usually correct) that all previous owners lie and don't service them than possibly oil changes.

Coolant looses its ability to protect the engine with time as the additives break down. I would suggest the 3 year rule or maybe 50000 miles.

Coolant also becomes acidic over time. The Feds pushed auto makers to reduce the amount of waste fluids that have to be collected or recycled for environmental reasons thus we get long life fluids.

Code P0128 popped up last week and I noticed it was taking a long time for the engine to warm up so I imagine my thermostat is stuck open. Went ahead and ordered one and was about to replace it but the 2 torx-40 bolts are not budging.

I tried my 12V impact wrench with no success. Sprayed some liquid wrench to soak in overnight. Is there something else I should try?

Don't screw up those heads ( and get new bolts). Put liquid wrench down for a couple of days, lightly tap on them fastener, try tightening it a bit to see if it moves, apply heat to bust up the corrosion,

I just replaced the tstat on my V70 XC. Had the same symptom you described, taking too long to get up to temp. One of the brass support arms on the tstat was actually broken, causing the spring to bend and force the thing open. I decided to save the money and not replace the coolant temp sensor, and glad I didn't as it didn't need it. Quick, easy job.

I bought a Mahle thermostat which is supposedly an OEM one.

Got it off after soaking it in liquid wrench for 2 days. 15 min job. Thanks everyone!
