When you say download, do you mean the programming to the car?

Vaids = Volvo Aftersales Diagnostics Information System
Vida = Vehicle Information and Diagnostics for Aftersales
Both are the "services manuals" and Diagnostics software the Volvo dealerships used before midyear 2015.
Vadis is the older package, Vida is the newer package.
You can get low cost diagnostics hardware that works with Vida and post 1999 - 2015 cars.
Finding the diagnostics hardware for Vaids is like finding a unicorn. Cutting a deal for it is like cutting a deal with a leprechaun.

A Volvo dealer can do it, also some folks here do it over the internet. About $100-150

Maybe take it to a good Volvo shop and have them scan it for you with the correct tool/software. Will cost less than $150 plus to get setup with the tool yourself and less work on your end.theWIFES_S70 wrote: ↑07 Feb 2018, 23:23Sorry to hear it man. After 99, you really need to get a Vida-Dice set up to read the "real" codes. (For our 98, the $10 Autel in the armrest has been all we need!) The module off ebay is about $75 and you can find software for free or pay for a easily set up version of the software--altogether about $100. And, of course, it needs to run off a laptop... Kind of involved if you ask me... But that's the only way you'll really know what's going on with it.GumboJones wrote: ↑07 Feb 2018, 20:31 The car isn't throwing any faults that my cheap generic reader is picking up. At this point I have a car at best with $1600 and we can probably get $1K realistically. We are just getting tired if fiddling with it. Everyone made this ETM repair seem like a sure fire thing.
$489 is quite a doozy...

Good luck figuring out a path forward.
As somebody whose thrown parts at cars a lot, I wouldn’t throw parts at your car in this situation. You guys are (understandably) frustrated with the car and spending money on a part that doesn’t fix it could violate the old saying: “Happy wife, happy life.”
Whether you keep the car, do the repair they recommend yourself or get rid of it when they tell you it needs some huge expensive fix, it might be worth it to get it scanned at a specifically Volvo, well-reputed shop.

It's a reality that running any car more than 10 years old will cost you 15 cents per mile in maintenance, so $1500 per year typically. You can nip that in half doing the work yourself.
If the car is worth $1000, that still applies. It's still much cheaper than buying a new or young one.
I haven't had a car payment since 2008, running 5 cars on about $2500 per year for parts and maintenance

My 98 V70 t5 has behaved this way before a couple of times. Both times were after I was doing repairs and I didn't tighten the intercooler hose clamp enough. Next time I drove the car I blew that hose off.... Symptoms were sputtering, loss of power, giving it lots of gas with nothing happening.... Fix was simple for (put the hose back on and tighten it down good!). Perhaps there is an issue with your IC piping / hoses... maybe you sprung a leak in one of those hoses. If they have never been replaced it wouldn't be crazy for that to be a failure item at this age.
I could be wrong just thought I'd offer that up.
best of luck!

This is what brought me to MVS 5 years ago. I struggled with all kinds of stuff, and finally took it my indie, who found it under the radiator cover. One hose clamp, new car.charleskennedy23 wrote: ↑09 Feb 2018, 08:13 My 98 V70 t5 has behaved this way before a couple of times.
