There used to be a Volvo mounting bracket to put it beneath the drivers seat, always within reach. Something to look for perhaps.

I believe in having one of these, not a small 1lb, but a larger like in the picture. One day it may help another driver as well. These come in different types, if I remember the ABC type is the one to get for cars. But again, the fire started under the rear bench, not easy to access

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABC_dry_chemical
That's a 2kg unit. I guess ABC is right, it's the dry powder kind. Costs $25 or something.

But of course you still need to reach the fire. So it's not fool proof just a bit of help.

I would gather anything is better than nothing.
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Sorry for the unfortunate loss after all the hard work you had done on the car. Gladly you are ok. Hopefully you have luck in finding a great replacement. S40/V50/C30 (P1) are unfortunately to small physically for me to be comfortable, but I think they are a neat little car. A T5 non-AWD would be nice if you can fit in one.

Good Luck!

For anyone else who may come across this: Did the mechanic get any more specific about how the leak occurred? Did the steel nub on the Fuel pump assembly break or did the quick connect fitting that attaches to it either detach from the pump assembly or leak past the o-ring?

If the steel pipe/nipple that the fuel line attaches to is intact, this might point to a problem with the quick connect fittings, which could be either the part on the fuel line or the steel pipe (part of the fuel sender assembly) that it locks onto may not be dimensionally right and the quick connect doesn't stay together or seal properly.

I'm not sure we should pass blame to PPS/Scantech without a little more detailed information and a little forensic analysis. Fuel leak in that area is kind of a big deal. The detailed cause, if it can be determined, might warrant a Volvo TSB if there isn't one already for the fuel lines/quick release mechanism, and/or (gulp) the NHTSA possibly getting involved if PPS sold a bunch of pump assemblies with improperly sized fittings that don't mate properly with that OE quick connect.

Edit: if the fuel line was also replaced with an OE or PPS replacement line (if PPS makes/sells that) somebody needs to get hold of the exact parts that were used in this case and determine if there's a problem. There could potentially be thousands of vehicles out in the wild driving around with a potential fire hazard defect/issue.

Thanks Neil! You always responded to my questions in this forum so quickly. Especially way back when I was re-doing my rear suspension and I couldn't figure out how to remove the coils haha.

Yeah those P1s aren't huge, but a great fit for me! I'm only 5'10". Test drove a non-AWD T5 the other day and loved it! Found another T5 out of state with like half as many miles that I just put a deposit on.

Thanks again!

And thanks everyone else for your kind words and thoughtful responses. I had never really considered having a fire extinguisher in the car. In retrospect, that may have saved the car if I put the fire out soon enough. Next Volvo will definitely have an extinguisher in the trunk.

Sorry for your loss. Glad you're okay, and enjoy your V50! I've always really liked those.

I agree, some further investigation would be great but at this point I don't know if that is an option. However I had finally learned learned with my old Saab 9-5 that PPS is junk. I've put a couple PPS parts on my V70 here and there and some things are fine, but a lot of things are just not quite right. I've had hoses that don't fit (in the case of the 9-5) and general fit and finish is mediocre at best.
If somebody has a Pro Parts fuel pump assembly, it would be really interesting to see if the fittings are the same size as the OE Volvo fuel pump assembly fittings. I wouldn't be surprised if they are different- and if that caused this fire in the first place.
Fortunately I used a Bosch pump in the original assembly when I replaced mine last year. I really need to check the seal on the assembly though, I don't think it went on right. It may be a coincidence but I've had P0442 ever since I replaced it.

Good luck with the V50/S40 T5! Either way nice vehicles with their own quirks! In fact one of my neighbors has asked me to look at replacing the spark plugs on his father in-laws S40 2.4i this weekend. Once nearly bought a V50 T5 AWD as a project but it turned out the guy was a flake, smoked heavily in it, and had outstanding finance on the car he 'forgot' about. Glad to walk away on that one!

That’s unfortunate... a V50 T5 AWD would be a fun car.
How do you forget about owing money on a car? Something was definitely up with that guy...
